We had a sofa just like this! I remember dusting the coke corner. My mom put a lamp and one of those clocks encased in a glass dome in that corner. It had a matching coffee table/lazy Susan thing which also had a huge, round mirror. (It was like a coffee table, but it spun. Think “Wheel of Fortune.”) The coffee table was upholstered for some reason.

  • Of course the state is being withholding on details, but there’s a few things that could have happened, possibly simultaneously (Note: my source is listening to NPR):

    1. The injections took an awfully long time compared to normal. The medical staff performing the injections have been accused of not being properly trained/qualified. Perhaps not all of it was actually injected into the veins? Witnesses reported that she was singing after the first injection.
    2. The older, more reliable sources of the drug used (phenolbarbital) now refuse to sell it to Tennessee prisons. The source of the drug may have been unreliable. Perhaps it wasn’t as potent as advertised.
    3. The drug can apparently expire/get old, reducing the efficacy to some degree. There is no guarantee they had a fresh supply.

It’s worth noting that as of yesterday, she was reported as being on a ventilator at the hospital.

Also I just wanna add that the wrestling character in the picture is (I believe) The Undertaker. The actor is now the mayor of Knoxville, Tennessee. This is a very Tennessee post.

  • Unfortunately, I’m not a native German speaker. So, take this with a grain of salt.

I will say that the German language has always been open to loan words from other languages. And, according to my German teacher (who is native), the biggest change recently in that regard is NOT how loan words are accepted BUT how quickly they are accepted these days. New loan words are being added all the time, especially by young people. He said that generally the word will be accepted as it is at first, and then over time it well become more “germanified” and used more like native words. He said this process used to take decades but now it can happen in less than a year. An example of a germanified English loan word is “chatten” which means “to chat,” just like English. Ich chatte, du chattest, wir chatten. (I chat, you chat, we chat.)

I believe the simplification of grammatical structures (like the abandonment of genetive) has been going on slowly over centuries and is mostly unrelated to contact with English speakers. But, there is likely some influence there.

  • While not totally gone, German’s genitive case (which is used to show ownership) is becoming less and less common. They have both the genetive case as well as their equivalent of " 's " - which is just “s,” if you’re wondering. Example:

    Der Herr der Ringe.

The Lord of the Rings. It would normally be “die Ringe,” but it becomes “der” in the genetive case.

Another transition in German is that the “formal you” is being used less and less frequently. I understand this is the case for a few other European languages as well.

  • What do you know?

    WHAT DO TOU KNOW?

Also, I already have my own little library so I’m set on that end. I probably would just get get blitzed and enjoy myself with my husband those last three days.

I have books on everything from “doctoring where there is no doctor” to scavenging the local area to encyclopedias, etc.

My library is for the survivors. I harbor no delusion that I am likely to be among them. (And, in the mean time, I just like books.)
