Dang, I didn’t know district heating was an old concept. I live in Belgium and it’s all the rage in new developments called “Écoquartiers”.

2·11 days agoDidn’t like it either. It’s not really because I was lost, but for quite a while, the game is a fetch quest fest. “Go there, do that, now go there” and that’s the game. You go where you have to go. Then you go to the next place. I was bored.

2·26 days agoWell, my hope is that humanity was so destructive out of ignorance. I hope that science and education, or in general the knowledge of how we impact the world and the consequences, lead to wiser choices. This could be for egotistical reasons (a healthy ecosystem leads to easier life for humans), or out of respect for other life forms.

2·26 days ago100% behind you regarding the devastating impact of capitalism on society and ecology.
However, the mass extinction began at the end of the Pleistocene with the megafauna. From the Paleolithic to the Middle Ages, humans never behaved sustainably.
Now that we have the scientific method and we are able to predict accurately the consequences of our actions, I want to believe that our spieces is able to change. Currently, capitalism is one of the main force against improvement.

Disclamer: I love regional and indigenous languages. I hate jacobinism, cultural imperialism and the fact that a handful of dominant languages are seen as prestigious or more useful.
That being said, if her native tongue is percieved as low prestige, I can feel her. Parents want to offer to their children the best chances and the best social position. People are often even ashamed of speaking a language, sad but not their fault.
Is it your mom’s case?
Stop with the supposed imminent AI apocalypse. It won’t happen. It’s a fantasy dreamt up by fanatic techbros and used to justify why they are fucking society and the climate, all starting from a Harry Potter fanfiction. Really.

World News@lemmy.world•Norway's King Harald dies aged 89English
3·2 months agoIf your question is genuine: Kings in European constitutional monarchies (or at least in Belgium) play a political part outside of the political circus of constant posturing.
First, they help to broker deals between parties elected by the people. In Belgium we have the awesome proportional representation, meaning that we escape the drawbacks of first-past-the-post. But we have a shitton of parties that need to negociate and compromise. The king is the showrunner but only elected officials are in power in the end.
Second, they perform diplomatic missions. These missions rely on personal bonds maintained over decades are more stable than for a president that can change every few years. The phone calls of the King allowed Belgium to obtain needed gear during the covid pandemic. We can also see how quickly relations can suffer when a bad president is in office. A King means stability.
Finally, the King must know his place. If he steps out of line and expresses the tiniest personal political opinion, he’s sidelined real quick. That happened in Belgium when the King refused to sign legalization of abortion. The parliament declared him unable to reign and the law was passed anyway.

Are humans dying of thirst too weak to update their water supply?
It had not occured to me until recently that all the big late Pleistocene fauna (like Ice Age animals) just lived alongside all animals still around today. Tens of thousands of year is nothing in terms of animal evolution.
So the African wildcat was absolutely contemporary to saber toothed cats!
It’s not that they were weak, it’s just that all their prey disappeared when humans showed up. Seeing natural selection as some kind of merit has flaws. If they evolved, they were well-adapted by definition. If they went extinct, the conditions that made them evolve changed.
Ah yes, beetlejuicing I believe was the term!
