the most highly-anticipated video game of all time…

Ehhhh I guess, if your asking the kids that play online. Everyone I know and have seen really does not care about it. They jumped the shark with all the online bs.

      Yeah.

You just KNOW there’s going to be more online microtransaction-y bullshit in 6 because they made SO MUCH from 5.

Makes it hard to be more than I’ll-wait-for-reviews-and-the-first-sale interested, personally.

I still think a commentor in another thread said it perfectly. GTA 6 will likely be a single player sample of GTA Online 2

I predict the online parts of GTA6 will bleed into the single player game. There will be things your SP characters can access only if you have unlocked it in online. Garages, cars, weapons and suchlike. Maybe even money. Will be done as though your online char is part of your SP gang or something.

I bought the ps3 copy on release and tbh enjoyed the sp greatly

I retried it on xbox x recently to play through again. It somehow felt wrong. I can’t put my finger on why kinda took some of the interest out for me. Zero interest in any of the online billshit either.

Kind of a pitty as I have been playing since the original top down game.

My over all interest is probably the same as yours

I’ve been playing since 1 as well. 5 completely killed any desire I had for the series. There’s some good things in it, it’s not a bad game or anything. Definitely something off though, I agree.

It was the overall downgrade from 4 that stood out to me. In 5, guns sounded worse, the driving became way too arcadey, the story was less tight and the three protagonists were more disjointed and Franklin was grossly underdeveloped, the city lacked diners etc to go eat at etc and felt less alive, no vigilante missions, NPCs were squishier residual in hand to hand, the car damage models are boring and less detailed than 4… I could go on.

5 was bizarrely a huge step back from everything they’d built towards for 4 that it’s no surprise 4 has remained hugely popular and maintained an incredibly active modding scene to keep the game looking youthful.

I think you mean “they jumped the shark cards”.

It’s not like they care anyways, it’s all just a live service now because they’re raking in the cash. I’ve resigned to probably not being able to play this series again at this point.

GTA 6 trailer is currently sitting at 206M. It’s not my most anticipated game (MH: Wilds!), but I would be delusional to think any game is more anticipated that gta 6 right now.

I don’t play, but that’s probably caused by users with potato connections or extremely high ping being allowed to connect to the server. Pretty common problem with online games.

Oh wow, so it has literally nothing to do with connecting players to the server or with each other? That is wild they wouldn’t have spent the time to fix it given all the money it makes, but hardly surprising.

GTA 5 was highly anticipated, even before anyone knew anything about online. GTA 6 is highly anticipated for the same reason. It’s a massive IP and most people just play the singleplayer anyway. Just because you and your friends don’t really care, doesn’t mean it’s not going to be the biggest launch of the decade (well, in history probably). I’m skeptical myself and will see what it is like once it comes out, but I can’t say I’m not interested in another GTA game.

I mean, just the trailer became the highest viewed youtube video in 24 hours, which is not music. I’d say it’s highly anticipated.

I don’t actually play GTA online, but they are very successful with their online offering, their daily low looks to be >60k concurrent players. I suspect it’d be VERY hard not to continue with the online bit.

On the contrary, I was going to ask you guys here, am I wrong to believe that there is zero interest in GTA 6? Or at the very least, people don’t care about a game that won’t be released for a year and a half?!?

We are a small circle. For every 1 of us that do not care, if you would simply go to Facebook or reddit you would see that there are more than 10 who do care.

This is the dynamic of the public sphere, where broadness to reach as many people as possible means allowing for a narrative that can be interpreted in such a way that each individual can be right in their perception of it.

While I saw the trailer for GTA6 as being a poor imitation of real life, in that the events of GTA4 and 5 were more creative in their situations because they were larger than life. These are things that are so crazy but they still could happen in real life. Instead of continuing that trend, the trailer is a 1:1 recreation of actual events that happened in real life… IMO, that is a drastic shift, as to me it would indicate that the creative direction is referencing, or recreating crazy events that have actually happened. Where previous installments tend to have commentary about the events.

Btw, doing my best to compare the actual trailers between the games, not what we know after the fact. Of course, GTA6 could completely go a different direction and those 3 instances of real life could be the only time something like that happens. I doubt it, but it could be. My whole point here is that you and I can analyze media and pick up on facets about the themes or the narrative, and in response in the public sphere the response you get in return are, “bro it’s not that deep it’s just GTA”, or “bro is literally writing an essay about a game”.

These are actual responses I got to a pretty heartfelt comment I made about the trailer. Media literacy, analysis, basically anything that isn’t the surface level just doesn’t matter to like 80-90% of people. Not one response I got even attempted to dig deeper into what I was trying to say, the closest it got was justifications about why R* did real life events for the trailer, and how the game won’t be a mishmash of memes.

So, I write all this to say, we are a small portion of the population. Also, I think R* is one of the last few companies to have “good grace” with its fan base from the era of when hype would last. A decade ago it wasn’t uncommon for a game to be announced at E3 and that game would be present in people’s minds for 4 to 6 years and each mention of it gets them more hype.

In the last 6 years, this has died in the majority of spaces. Metroid Prime 4 had hype, it still does but it’s drastically diminished. If the exact events right now were happening 1 or 2 decades ago, Prime 4 would still be extremely hype.

Cyberpunk was another example of this, at the end of the era where it has good grace, it had an extremely long hype, and then marketing brought that even further and then lost it all - likely a significant reason why hype overall isn’t as prevalent.

Finally, Red Dead Redemption 2 was the same situation as GTA 6, where it had a few years where everyone knew it was coming soon, then it was announced, and now the years are going by waiting for release. So with that said, hype still does exist for a lot of games as long as it’s within 2 years, but beyond that it’s basically forgotten about or could even be criticizing at this point for its extremely long development time, unless the studio has a large enough fan base for it to not matter, like Halo, CoD, Battlefield, whatever.

A false delay announcement is a 500 IQ move because R* will look really silly if they really have to delay it after denying
