Yeah, that same sensibility that kept Charlie Brown a hopeless sad sack was even more pronounced in the early strips. Young Charles Schulz was edgy and fresh. Middle aged Schulz was still brave and creative. Old Schulz seemed content simply not to descend quite so deeply into self parody as Jim Davis or Bill Keane.
I don’t remember who that girl is, but she’s written like a combination of Sally and Lucy, except with the nihilism turned up to 11.
The actual first strip is not exactly all sweetness and light either.
The parody is much closer to the original than i expected.
