They’re banning it for third-parties specifically. They know it drives traffic and are ensuring they get all of it.

They’ve been inching towards banning it for a while. When hardly anyone raised a fuss when it was effectively banned from /r/all they took that as a sign that when they take greater measures no one of note would care.
