Ahead of the council vote, there was a faceoff between supporters and opponents. Moms For Liberty held a protest outside city hall.

Moms for Liberty is protesting liberty. What a time to be alive

Famously the statue of Liberty says " Bring us your wealthy, your heterosexual whites, Your Christian elite yearning to breathe free"

Hah, Dirty Blvd by Lou Reed:

Give me your hungry, your tired, your poor - I’ll piss on 'em
That’s what the Statue of Bigotry says
Your poor huddled masses, let’s club 'em to death
And get it over with and just dump 'em on the boulevard

Sadly I think the original poem has always been a lie. We’ve historically treated all immigrants like a subhuman species; black people, the Irish, and jews, in particular. (Antisemitism being frowned upon is a relatively new thing)

Love seeing the home town make some good headlines nationally for once.

Unfortunately Katie Valenzuela who introduced this bill was just defeated in the recent election. Lost by only 500 votes with 8% turnout. People don’t like the direction of the country but won’t show up to support those fighting to make it better.

Well they definitely don’t deserve it but I do wish they would pay a bit closer attention to what’s going on around them. On the other hand they live in an exploitative system that leaves little time or space for the human connections that could help build consciousness. It is a thorny issue.

Of course they deserve it. Democracies give a great power to the people, and with great power comes great responsibility. If people neglect their responsibility they deserve the consequences.

You’re talking about a country where Republicans have spent decades telling people their votes don’t actually matter. That’s what we’re fighting against.

You can thank Adam Schiff for forcing MAGA Republicans out to vote so he wouldn’t have to face off against Porter.

I’m so glad for my trans friends that there is a safe place for them to go, but so sad that it’s necessary at all.

They won’t give trans people over to ICE or?

Jokes aside, this is a great move. Idk if “sanctuary city” is the right term though.

Sure, but the term “sanctuary city” applies to protection from ICE or other immigration/deportation activities

Not necessarily. It was frequently used that way during the Trump administration but sanctuary doesn’t have to be specific to a certain group of people to qualify.
