From Nature’s Edge
The best thing to come home to-besides my amazing wife-is fresh baby owls! We incubated these little fluffballs from nests that were in dead trees that had to come down. Two different trees, actually. The eggs were yellow, that’s how long we’ve had them!
Now we’ve got two owlets out, one still pipping, and three more still growing strong. It’s honestly the best time of year-magical, heartwarming, and just the right amount of chaotic.
Of course, it’s always followed by the daily panic of “OH MY GOD WHY ARE YOU LYING LIKE THAT?!” as I rush over thinking one has died, only for them to blink up at me like, “What? I’m napping.”
Tiny heart attacks aside, nothing beats this feeling.
So cute and so fragile at the same time 🥰
I know! I would be so nervous to hold it!
Oh my gosh look at the little FEET
The little toe beans were my favorite part too! Squeeeee! 😍
Where are the owls? All I see is cotton fluff.
The fluff is sprayed with a nutrient mixture every 4 hours and then placed in an incubator set to replicate adult owl belly conditions. After about 2 weeks, the seed in the center of the fluff sprouts a new beak, and the new owl will grow out from that over the next 6-8 weeks, at which point it is separated from the original fluff.
I just noticed they have the same kitchen timer as me! 😁
