I am confused. Why hasn’t mastodon capitalized on this yet? With the drama of reddit and hype around lemmy shouldn’t we see some fanfare for mastodon and other open source alternatives too? Meanwhile a meta-affiliated product logs 5 million users on launch day.
Mastodon and lemmy can’t handle load like that, don’t have apps that are that good yet, and it’s very confusing for new people coming in since the whole fediverse thing isn’t explained all that well.
People are also forgetting that every person with an Instagram account can instantly turn it into a Threads account, bypassing the need to set up anything new.
Millions of people already have a Threads account whether they realize it or not.
It’s easy for Threads to take off because a bunch of people are posting about it on Instagram, which is extremely popular.
Watching so many people get threads on Instagram is, for me at least, like watching the millions of people blindly accept all of the whacky government requirements during covid.
The vast majority of people aren’t critical thinkers.
blindly accept all of the whacky government requirements during covid.
Can you elaborate on what you mean by that?
I’d rather not as I’m done talking about COVID in my life. It’s evident, I think, that there were a lot of disagreements on what the response should be at various times. I think we can also agree, no matter which side of the political spectrum we fall, that COVID was not, on the whole, handled extremely well.
