I still design my personal web pages like we’re in the modem days. Mostly text, and the images are highly compressed jpegs with tons of artifacting. No javascript. It’s a lot of fun

All the places around me are installing ordering kiosks inside, which not only removes even more human interaction but also tracks data I’m sure because you have to use a card to pay. I hate it so much

Real purty, well done man

This is my main gripe. Pick up item > second or two of empty hesitation > over at least two dialogue boxes “… Oh wait, my pockets are full! What should I do?” > selection > result. Good grief, just have a little X show up or “inventory full” if I try to pick something up when my pockets are full. Stop making me have to mash A for every minor game interaction.

The excessive dialog in general is really a frustration. Half the time I just accept less cash for dropping items into the sale box outside the store because I don’t want to have deal with mashing A through all the Nooklings dialog when all I want to do is friggin sell stuff and move on with going out to collect more. And even then you’re not safe, because the next day when you log in, they call you on your phone and tell you that they paid you, over multiple dialogue screens.

I’m all for taking things nice and slow overall, the chill pace of the game is part of the appeal for me. But when every tiny little routine action is deliberately made to take a longer time than it needs to, it gets frustrating.

I wanted to love this game so bad. I loved the setting and the feel and the music. After a few days of trying to play it, the last straw was when I accidentally like grappled/threatened to rob a random guy in town when I was trying to wave and say howdy, and I just turned it off and never booted it up again

I’m just using pass on Linux. Haven’t figured out a good way to access my passwords through it on mobile yet, but I avoid using my smartphone when at all possible so I haven’t been particularly motivated to find a solution to that

Proton seems okay still at the moment, but with their growing in scope and success I imagine it’s only a matter of time

I knew trouble was brewing when they started adding the little corporate cute waving graphics and stuff to the UI. Glad I already migrated away

It’s good to be aware that this kind of thing is easier for some than others. It’s been studied plenty that real addictive behaviors are being deliberately fostered and taken advantage of by those wanting us addicted to their products and platforms. Sometimes sheer mindfulness and willpower are not enough.

Getting together in person to socialize.

Calling friends on the phone and having an actual conversation being a normal thing. And heck, you might get to know their family a little too because you never knew who was going to pick up the phone.

Feeling perfectly confident without a phone in your pocket. Driving somewhere unfamiliar? No worries, if you get lost just pull over at a gas station and ask for directions.

Being free and on your own when out and about. No constant distractions and interruptions from a cell phone and people trying to get your attention via your digital tether.

Limited choice in game, movie, and TV (no downloads/streaming on a whim) meant sometimes you were bored with what you had, so you’d go outside to have fun, or over to a friend’s house.

The ideas and innovations that you would have because your brain wasn’t constantly bombarded by distractions and overstimulation.

Technological developments feeling exciting and inspiring optimism for a better world rather than dystopian and oppressive.

Reduced expectations; people didn’t expect everything instantly and the pace of life felt more chill.

Feeling like a real person in a real world.

This was such a beautiful thing.

Good on you for your sacrifice. Might come across as sarcastic but I mean it, so many parents won’t engage in activities their kids enjoy because the parent just finds it too boring and next thing you know there’s nothing for them to connect over and they both feel the other is distant and uninterested in them as a person
