You’re thinking of a desktop KVM for connecting multiple computers to one set of devices. This post is asking about network attached KVMs for providing remote access to virtually a keyboard, monitor, mouse plugged directly into a machine. This allows out of band access to things outside of the operating system - e.g. bios/efi, entering full disk encryption passwords, even pressing power/reset buttons via jumpers to motherboard headers. This type of KVM is equivalent to Lights Out Managers like LOM/DRAC in the server world.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•do your managers feel insulted if you read to learn instead of talking to them?English
28·6 months agoA couple things in the way you explained yourself lead me to believe you might benefit from improving your soft skills. Not everything in a job is specifically technical. If you work with people, you have to learn how to work with people. You don’t have to enjoy it, but it makes things easier.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Should I use lubrication to wheel lug nuts/bolts?
92·7 months agoNo lube, just dry, torque to spec. Don’t know where you got the idea to lube them, that’s super dangerous.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•How to run programs sandboxed on a work pcEnglish
35·9 months agoOnly do work on work devices. This is a quick way to lose a job. Always assume the company sees everything that’s happening on their device. No way around it, and any attempt to get around it will raise the alarm. Just do the music/podcasts/etc… on another device. Why “need to be able to run it on their work PC”?
I’m running my trusty old Antec 900 with three Rosewill hotswap bays to hold 12 3.5” drives.

I’ve got this laying on its side currently, and I need to replace the failed top exhaust fan, but I’m sure you could come up with a rack mount option to throw it in a rack. Probably about 4u tall on its side.
