politics @lemmy.world•'Newsom Does Not Want to Tax Billionaires,' Say Campaigners, 'But Wants You to Think He Does'
13·4 months agoCalifornia loses more people each year than live in the entire state of Wyoming, and that’s normal. If you know people that moved states for lower taxes, then I doubt they are billionaires. Why are you, someone who lives outside of California, so invested in a proposed law for a place you don’t live? I don’t live there either, but I don’t care about where billionaires live. I’m just pointing out that it’s mostly empty threats. Remember when Mamdani passed a tax on secondary residences and people threatened to leave? Guess what happened.

politics @lemmy.world•'Newsom Does Not Want to Tax Billionaires,' Say Campaigners, 'But Wants You to Think He Does'
20·4 months agoIf this wasn’t California, I might somewhat agree with your statement. These people aren’t going anywhere, because the California coast is obscenely beautiful. Some might leave, but the majority will stay since the tax will end up just being a tiny inconvenience for their level of wealth.

News@lemmy.world•Scouting America says transgender kids are still welcome after Pete Hegseth claimed they weren’t
5·8 months agoThe organization is an absolute mess right now, including our district council. There’s so much that needs to be addressed, and it feels like they prioritized this situation over the actual needs of the organization. It feels hypocritical to have the kids recite the scout oath and law every meeting, while watching leadership get bullied by outsiders. It feels especially personal because now it seems like my daughter is about to be targeted. There are people still upset that girls are allowed, and they are about to feel much more emboldened by this latest misstep. It’s just mentally exhausting and I could spend my free time helping my community in other ways, that aren’t trying to exclude my kid.

News@lemmy.world•Scouting America says transgender kids are still welcome after Pete Hegseth claimed they weren’t
6·8 months agoI’m not the person your reply is to, but you’re spot on about where this is headed. From the DOD’s initial statement about Scouting America, it’s obvious that they want it to go back to excluding girls from the organization. As a current den leader, I was already dissatisfied with the way the organization is being run, and this is probably the final straw for me to just step away from them completely. Leadership is acting like cowards while also asking for donations. It’s incredibly disappointing.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•at what point in life it's too late to go back to school?
4·10 months agoMy spouse is finishing a degree at 36 and kicking themselves they didn’t do it sooner. I’ll have some extra time in about 2 1/2 years and I want to try and fit in a class or two. It just depends on your situation, but if you’re needing a degree to get a better job, you’ll want to get to that earning potential ASAP. The cost could potentially just be a drop in the bucket if you still plan on working for another 30+ years. It can also be rewarding just to expand your knowledge and grow in unexpected ways. My advice is to just do it and get it over with already. Especially if it will lead to better opportunities and earnings. Or don’t, it’s your life.

News@lemmy.world•A New Bill Aims to Ban Both Adult Content Online and VPN Use. Could It Work?
13·1 year agoIm sorry, but are you a psychologist or other mental health professional that works with kids? The typical behavioral issues remain, with new ones now being correlated with unsupervised access to the internet. So let’s just do nothing to try and help our educators and society at large.

News@lemmy.world•A New Bill Aims to Ban Both Adult Content Online and VPN Use. Could It Work?
14·1 year agoActually subscribe to a porn site. These problems haven’t always existed either. The internet is filled to the brim with abusive porn that wasn’t just available at your fingertips. Pre-internet you had to find magazines or actual movies. It’s very convenient to just shrug your shoulders when you’re not the one dealing with the actual problems. Fuck me for caring about the fate of kids, I guess.

News@lemmy.world•A New Bill Aims to Ban Both Adult Content Online and VPN Use. Could It Work?
25·1 year agoI actually work in education and this is genuinely a problem. There are children in elementary with unfettered access to the internet, and they are the kids with the most behavioral issues. These kids then grow into adults with issues and it genuinely does have a negative effect on our society. I do NOT want VPNs banned, because that is an obvious play at stopping adults watching whatever they want. What I do want is some way to stem the tide of hardcore porn being watched by young kids, which is currently the case. “Parents need to parent.” Yeah, good fucking luck with that. I’d encourage anyone reading this to reach out to your local educator and ask if too much internet access is fucking up these kids. I’m guessing I already know their answer.
