  • I was talking to a coworker recently about past work experiences and how crazy COVID-19 was when it first came out. I was working at a hospital, not the normal medical kind but a state run psychiatric hospital. Still its a hospital that behaves in hospital ways, especially when it comes to communicable diseases.

So its November 2019 and word is that there is a nasty respiratory disease making its way in the medical news, everyone is a little nervous but we are in eastern Washington, in a small town. The world is very far away, until it isnt.

December comes and the first case of COVID one of my coworkers who had a history of health problems dies a couple weeks after catching COVID. His at home caretaker dies from COVID. His wife who also works at the hospital gets COVID but she tells us she didn’t even really notice it.

That was just the beginning. After about 5 deaths of employees at the hospital they stopped telling us.

I will never forget one person. He called me on a Thursday and left a voicemail requesting I call him back because he hates to go through the help desk and likes a human touch and enjoys my conversations.

I called him back but he went home sick. I tried calling him the next week but he was still out. A week later I go to his desk to see if he is there and there are a bunch of his coworkers there. He passed away over the weekend, COVID won.

I have worked in the hospital/medical industry for over 20 years. 16+ of those were at the # 1 trauma center in Washington State.

I don’t know how so many people can believe this was all just a hoax. I will forever have a great and deep seated hate for people expressing doubt about the deadliness of the disease.

  • CIS guys don’t talk to each other like “hey I’m CIS!”

There’s no reason to make it anything more than that. I was trying to be kind and considerate. I didn’t have the answers that he was looking for. I wanted him to know that there’s other guys here like him.

If you start the conversation and tell me you aren’t a typical CIS man, I’d respond that I was a typical CIS man. Does that help you understand?
