You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK that powerful people telling you not to read newspapers are attempting to manipulate youEnglish
22·2 months agoHearst was a newspaper magnate from the … USA! The USA is a different story, as news is and always was business in the USA; look at all the television channels with all the commercial breaks, even during the news! They even tried to ruin the World Cup 26 by introducing these constant drinking breaks in between, so that sport isn’t the main item anymore, but the ads are. Distilling the news from these US businesses was challenging and has become worse. Lucky for you, there are still some good newspapers and channels in the USA (PBS. CNN), and naturally you can also subscribe to European news sources: the Guardian, English version of El Pais, DW from Germany, BBC is quite ok too. Le Monde. Al Jazeera, Euronews. (I read all of them; not in full naturally, I need to earn money)

333·2 months agoThey do and they are wrong. Most newspapers and magazines employ journalists that do quite a good job; people that are honest and believe in what they do. The same is true for most television news channels. On the contrary, social media channels are extremely biased, and fact checking is close to zero. (Sure, don’t believe Fox News, and Bild, Welt, politico etc belong to springer; so always compare multiple sources; never trust a single source).

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What is something about another culture than your own that you like?
21·2 months agoThe food culture in France. Eating lunch for 2-3 hours (not every day naturally), enjoying tasty, well-prepared food and enjoying fine company.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How do I survive the US immigration?
20·2 months agoI have traveled very often to the United States, and the biggest challenge is that the custom guard that you meet at entry is like a little dictator, who makes all the decisions on his own. It helps to be friendly to listen to him, but even then, if they decide that you should strip down to your underwear, there’s nothing you can do about it (I’ve heard that this happens). The worst thing is, that this was pre-Trump, so you can bet that it has gotten much worse. On the other hand, many people still enter the United States, so successful entry is still possible. My advice to you, make sure that all your papers are in order, double check that you have everything with you. They most likely would like to take a look at your phone, so you may consider getting a burner phone with a few apps and an email account installed, perhaps a Facebook app (It shouldn’t look too empty, that would be conspicuous). You could even get a brand new SIM card. Concerning your laptop, the fact that you have patient data, that is encrypted won’t impress them much, If they want to see it, you have to show it, and if you don’t, you won’t get into the country. Can’t you put the data into a cloud, and once you are there, download it? In short, prepare well, double check that you do not bring anything with you that could lower your chances of entry.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Should I just abandon this online identity and start over?
1·2 months agoThe internet never forgets and it’s an illusion that some secret service or police force won’t be able to connect you to your past posts. AI is going to make this so much easier (scan for styles, date stamps, regular speling errors…). So sure, make a reset of your accounts, but more importantly, be careful what you post, and don’t travel to Russia if you said something mildly negative about Putin in a post five years ago.
