I ducked into grad school thinking it’d help.

Then it was a single skill I picked up on my undergraduate that landed me a job. From there I just pick up experience where I can and take on responsibilities of higher jobs and then apply to those jobs elsewhere.

It took me 2 years to start making more than 80% of my graduate professors and 7 to make more than all of them.

From what I heard one project was putting plants in front of the elevators lol.

We had a jackass CIO come in and do this prior to covid. Turned our 6 year policy of 3 days/week wfh into absolutely NO wfh. Told everyone on a friday that it started monday. People had moved 2+ hours away to live cheaper. They’d drive in on a Monday, stay the night, work Tuesday, and then go home until the next week.

What he quickly found out was it pissed all of us off. He couldn’t get anyone to come in at any time because we all refused to carry our laptops home anymore. If we weren’t at work, we weren’t working. He tried pulling some bullshit a few times but each time HR surprisingly backed up his absolute no wfh policy he made them drill into us and stand firm on in many cases.

I left within a year after that and over the next two years they had a 50% turn over rate, all the top brass eventually got fired including the CIO but the damage is done. Last I heard they brought in a “morale expert” to keep people from breaking down in the hallways daily.

After SIX years fully remote my agency is now death rolling us into rto. First it was “just once a month”, then “well only once a week”, and now “two days a week isn’t bad!” and it’s absolute bullshit. I’ve heard my direct manager and director both say we returned to the office to “make our new building look full” (that started construction AFTER we went full remote) and “to socialize.” Fuck them.

The worst part though? Our new building is ALL open office/open table spaces with no privacy bullshit. I cannot explain how fucking terrible that is to anyone who hasn’t experienced it. If you still have cubicles, consider them a luxury.

The key is recognizing your worth. I’m this programmer from this example where I work. In the last 3 years I negotiated two separate times for higher pay, collectively increasing my pay 80% and it was relatively easy. You have to be willing to walk out the door though if it doesn’t work out.

I was thinking about buying some for recording my kids’ events like schools graduations, performances, etc. I just hate watching everything through my phone instead of them and thought this would give the best of both worlds. As it stands now I do a lot less recording so I don’t “miss” it.

Now I’m thinking maybe I shouldn’t.

When the KY Governor went Dem the KY Cons tried to strip his ability to appoint vacant Congress seats. This was overturned in court.

However they did add a rule that the Governor could not replace someone within 95 days of an election.

95 days before 11/3/2026, the midterms, is 7/31/2026. I imagine they will use the “he’s recovering” line until 8/1/2026 so the Cons have tighter control over congress. Or at the very least, they are trying to chew up as much time as possible before he gets replaced.

As someone who prefers linux but is relegated to Windows, my wife is strictly an Apple person and I have to say I’m impressed with them.

She doesn’t use a laptop a lot but she has some upcoming certifications to renew and so she brought out her 2015 macbook pro. It was outdated and had no recent OS updates available. However after a simple manual installation of a few year newer OS it runs just fine. At one point we considered buying her a new laptop this time. While looking at new laptops I told her we could get a cheaper Windows one that would be ok for a few years or another, slightly more expensive macbook that would last another 10. I don’t think we’ll need to buy a new one though as her 2015 seems ok to run at least until 2028 and that’s only because of available OS upgrades.

Our kids were also using her iPad 2 when they were younger from 2011 and it ran fine until 2022 and again, no hardware issues, just old performance and lack of support.

But probably the biggest thing is when I put a pihole on my network. Almost EVERY device be it google, Samsung, Windows, LG, smartphones, printers, TVs, etc etc is CONSTANTLY pinging outside your network. To the tune of thousands of blocked attempts per day per device. Yet Apple products are constantly at the bottom of the blocked attempts list, closer to about 100 per device per day.

Aside from the xenophobia… it’s just a really fucking terrible film.

I was there 14 years and never had a ban. Not even a warning. In the last 6 months I was banned 4 times for comments ranging from “ice gonna mess with someone exercising their 2A and find out” to pointing out a mod’s contradiction when he said Harris both was anti-gun AND admitted she said in an interview she carried a Glock. He kept messaging me in DMs via modmail (which you can’t block) even after I asked them to block me.

My final, site wide ban for every account linked to my device was for saying Don chomo’s seizing of immigrant bank accounts was akin to Jews having their property taken by nazis.

On appeal they actually replied that the permanent ban stays because I was “targeting a group of people”. I didn’t even know what to say.
