The people who spend 23 hours a day running agents and outputting 300 slop emails an hour aren’t seeking cognition, they’re seeking quick rewards; “working” with “AI” isn’t a cognitive task so much as it’s a gambling task. Just keep asking Claude to try again on that PR and eventually you get that dopamine hit from it making a not-totally-shitty solution and you never had to actually engage your higher brain function, you just did lots of low level churn of “prompting”.
Yes. We’re consuming lots of natural resources at a prodigious rate, like topsoil, phosphorous, and even fresh water — never mind fossil fuels. It seems fairly clear that the planet cannot support a population of 7 billion humans for very long (on a geological timeframe), so either we’re in a civilizational bubble that will pop or we’re going to have to come up with another round of magical technologies à la the Haber Process to keep the bubble going…
Technically, a router is any device which routes traffic at the IP layer (layer 3; based on IP addresses like 10.1.2.3 or fe80::abcd:1234), as opposed to some other later (e.g., a device which routes at layer 2 is a switch; a device which routes at layer 7 is a load balancer).
In colloquial usage, “router” usually refers to a home internet gateway, which is a device that does a few things:
It usually does this by being a single box containing a small Linux or BSD computer running some custom software, dedicated WiFi and Ethernet chips, and some antennas. No magic there; you can do the same thing with any computer if you put enough elbow grease into it.

There are still some of those that I’m familiar with, mostly entry-level white collar professional jobs like “receptionist” or “desktop IT”.
Beyond that, the 9-5 is dead, though. A lot of the rest of American white-collar jobs are 24x7 where you’re expected to respond to slack or email within a few minutes all day, and probably also be in the office 8-10 hours per day. And working-class jobs have all moved to unscheduled part time nonsense where they’ll give you 29.5 hours a week (to avoid having to give you benefits), but won’t tell you which 29.5 hours until the last possible moment.
Licensed childcare runs between $2500 and $4000 per month per child here in the Bay Area; $200k salary is about $150k after tax. Doesn’t take a terribly big family to totally exhaust that amount if both parents need to work to bring it in.
I was skeptical of the rumors that Gabbard was some kind of foreign sleeper agent, but if Roger Stone is standing up for her, then perhaps she is working for the Russians…
Webpass used to be great. The instant it became Google Fiber, it seemed to be totally abandoned; no rollout to new buildings/neighborhoods, no speed improvements (most locations still top out at 1Gbps and local favorite Sonic has rolled out 10Gbps fiber throughout the Bay Area), and prices are stubbornly high ($70/mo for 1Gbps versus $40 from competitors). Oh, and there’s still no IPv6.
I’m sure Astound will be even worse but Google has been an awful steward of this service.

I think the risk is more that someone has a 15A-rated outlet on a 15A circuit breaker, plugs a solar panel into one socket and then a power strip with 30A of space heaters into the other socket. Breaker doesn’t trip because the main panel is only providing 15A, but the outlet lights on fire.
Not sure why that isn’t a problem in places these are more common.
MySQL often has moderately higher performance (particularly for workloads where you want your data clustered by PK, which is how InnoDB is natively structured) and its replication system is much more flexible than either of PostgreSQL’s. I like Percona personally, but MariaDB is fine too.

A startlingly high fraction of US businesses rely on a combination of tax evasion, accounting fraud, and wage theft to make the business work. Everyone knows this, but it’s still sufficient reason to keep reporting minimal.
20.4% price increases for the energy sector as a whole. 74% Y/Y price increase for heating oil! 0.1% wage gains (= real wage losses)! What a bloodbath of a report! I’m kind of surprised that the administration didn’t try to hold it another month.
