Burh I would honestly have even more questions, who holds the lantern? What about the sunset? And sunrise?
I really appreciate your take. It’s definitely a valid concern. The good thing about this,is that because Lemmy it’s not a company, decisions and changes are more discussed on the community.
Regarding the issue that you bring to light with the idea I propose, maybe the join-lemmy instance list can only show instances that are federated? Again it will still allow advanced users to use a custom URL to join to a custom instance.and because (as far as my understanding goes, please correct me if I’m wrong) new instances are not federated by default. The mayority of the community will have to have agreeded to the communities on the list to some extent. In that case I personally use jerboa for mobile, and the idea of having multiple accounts sounds great too.
On regards to educating users better, that actually is a good idea. When I hear the term “feddiverse” I think that maybe a visual representation of the Lemmy federation can be helpful to understand the whole thing. Maybe an interactive map when you join to understand what’s your “home” instance. Hell maybe we can take a page out of Nintendo Pokemon go and make a little questionare to suggest a instance for a new user to join.(again this will be a suggestion and they can always join a custom instance or redo the questionare). This will make it easier for the run of the mill user to visualize the concept and streamline the process
I was actually reading about it on another lemmy post. The thing is that most users will not engage with something that it’s so complicated. A User who wants to join Reddit ,Facebook or Twitter they just go to the website register and then can use the platform. And while it’s great for advanced users to have the choice to select their own instance. Most people don’t want to be bothered by that and I can detract for the easy adoption of the platform (adoption that it’s important for us to reach a critical user Mass and make lemmy a real competitor to Reddit). Maybe we can propose a change to the GitHub. To add more abstraction . Like when you sign up,it will automatically pick an instance for you from the federation to balance the load. But you can also (if you are an advanced user) pick it by yourself .
…wait and how does it become night? Like the lantern gets turn off? What about when it’s night in a place but morning on another?
I wouldn’t know friend. I’m not in France. Do you have any insight on the situation?
Yeah it’s mostly investment people that have a lot of money and are basically the ones pulling the strings. Because if they don’t like you then the value of your company goes down and poof you were deeply s***
What what? Did this happened? I haven’t heard anything about it on the news. Do you have a link?
Ellen Pao served as the interim CEO of Reddit from 2014 to 2015. During her tenure, Reddit banned several large communities, including r/fatpeoplehate, for violating their terms of service. This subreddit, which was dedicated to disparaging overweight individuals, was one of the most active and popular on the site. Following this action, Pao was widely criticized and compared to a dictator, with many users accusing her of censorship.
In July 2015, Victoria Taylor, who coordinated Reddit’s IAMAS, was dismissed, and Pao was blamed for this as well. Protests and attack campaigns against Pao ensued, eventually leading to her resignation.
However, years later, it was revealed that Pao was not responsible for these actions. She was not the one who fired Taylor - that was Alexis Ohanian, Reddit’s founder and Executive Chairman, who had more authority than Pao. Furthermore, Pao was not in favor of banning subreddits. She had voiced her opposition to this, but was overruled by Ohanian and Reddit co-founder Steve Huffman (aka spezz). Despite this, Pao was unfairly blamed and criticized for these decisions.

How can we help? Like if I wanted to donate to bluesky? So they can get more servers? Is it like Lemmy? Or is it close?
I have never through of that…how is day an night supposed to work on a flat earth? Like Minecraft they just…rotate around? What about the underside of the earth? The other side of the coin…do people live there too? Can we visit them if we dig a hole?
I don’t know dude. Like I love the idea of decentralization but the reality is that the mainstream people are more likely to move on mass. Idk how to set a Lemmy instance, and most people won’t
