I enjoy my Garmin for health and sports data, but I wouldn’t buy a regular smart watch, I don’t use its notifications or payments (or whatever else ppl use them for).

I love that level of detail in books! Reportedly in the first 6 books of the Wheel of Time every time they mention the moon, it’s in the correct phase. Iirc it’s never relevant to the plot.
had to look it up, this is indeed ridiculous 😅 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vCvnOv3-Og
I hope this is satire 👀
interestingly it’s the same Violife brand that we have in the UK :)
thanks, TIL :)
I was enjoying reading this until he “found God” 😐 happy for his new healthy lifestyle though
Was that some sort of kombucha-flavoured soft drink? Actual kombucha drink tastes only like vinegar. (I drank it for maybe a year in a health-crazed period ~20 years ago xD)
Out of curiosity, where do you live? I’m in Scotland with occasional visits to Hungary, and both have a bunch of kinds of vegan cheese now. In the UK it’s more mainstream, but in Hungarian “organic shops” I found some interesting ones, like strawberry-flavoured cream cheese, that we don’t have in Scotland.
Back when I became vegan in 2012, the Scottish vegan cheese situation was dreary, but by the pandemic it got pretty good.

I get this on FB’s Messenger, it notifies me that there’s a new message in the thread. Yes, it’s my message, the one I just sent, thanks Meta, I’m aware of it.

indeed…

In Hungary “dekagram” is the default unit when buying food from actual humans at a deli counter or market. Asking for 30 deka of cheese sounds like a more human-scale number than asking for 300 grams.
Though it’s interesting that hecto would be even better for this, as we always use deka in 10s (or at least 5s), so we could just ask for 3 hectograms of cheese for an even more human-scale number :)
A highly authoritarian individual will be the first to volunteer when someone needs to run into a burning building to save someone. They will be the first to volunteer to defend the community. They will also be the people that organize trash pickups, because littering is bad.
I don’t think this is necessarily true. A person can just as easily be motivated to do these from a sense of solidarity and mutual responsibility than a desire for hierarchies. (Ursula le Guin’s The Dispossessed explores the various aspects of how a society could be built on such principles.)

Update: It worked for me! It said something like “waiting period completed” and let me proceed.

I tried it just now, will see if it works 👀

according to Google, you can enable an “advanced mode” that lets you keep using other software: https://piefed.world/post/1386916#comment_6826604
(not sure what will happen in that 24 hours waiting period)

if it helps, as a lifetime Windows user I installed Linux Mint on an old laptop a few weeks ago, and used it for a week while travelling, and it went well :D It’s just different enough from Windows to have a bit of a learning curve, but nothing too scary.

Not sure if they changed the original title or it was editorialised by OP, but the current article title is much better at highlighting the problem:
Revealed: how Russia uses mobile ‘super-app’ Max to spy on its citizens
Research shows tens of millions of people are being forced to use platform that amounts to ‘backdoor’ on their device
I’m the kind of person who makes spreadsheets about everything, so I have a spreadsheet to see how my running performance changes over time and another one tracking my sleep, stress levels, habits, etc.
Most of this I could see on Garmin’s web UI, but I don’t assume the company will be around forever, so I’d rather save the data for myself. Now I don’t use the data for anything specific, but it’s nice to see it confirm the effect my good/bad habits have on my health 😅 Also it gives an extra motivation to get off my ass.
