j5906@feddit.orgtoMicroblog Memes@lemmy.world•It was just a kid's toy, you know.English
4·4 months agoWell it was from an old chemistry set, I would be impressed if it had 95% purity and god knows what the other 5% are.
Also it depends a little bit on how big the vial was, a small HPLC vial may only have contained 100mg, the buttplug style vial they often use to showcase ores/salts may contain like 1kg of it. And also if it was properly sealed or just plugged.
Last factor would be time, a Prof swallowing 10mg once a year has contact with this stuff for 60 days, but lets say she got it from her brother when he was age 15 that would mean semi-close contact 8 hours a day for 80 years. Also the Prof hopefully didnt swallow more of it as uranium apart from being radioactive is also toxix although it takes like 8g to kill one, given the density thats not a too big pill to swallow.
Finally its still only a chance, every bit of radioactivity that hits you could be the one causing cancer.

11·4 months agoThe country that had the first nuclear reactor connected to the grid was the USSR with Obninsk. The scientist first discovering nuclear fission were the chemists Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann and physicists Lise Meitner and Otto Robert Frisch (all german and austrian).
The first manned spaceflight was Vostok 1 with Yuri Gagarin (USSR).
Pathetic. In german(y) you can essen Essen in Essen.

Lemmy Shitpost@lemmy.world•Why buy a new handle when you can use a spoon
2·6 months agoGiven the craftsmanship on display here, I bet 10 money that they used the most simple way: hammering a nail slightly larger than the screw through the spoon (which is not that hard, especially if it’s silver).
and it takes 1 calorie to heat 1g of water by 1°C, so with your daily recommended food intake of 2000kcal you could heat 2000l of water by 1°C or raise 20l of water from 0°C to 100°C.
Also a normal person can rides the bike between 0W and 100W comfortably, while trained people peak at around 1000W for short sprints.

News@lemmy.world•Multiple hard techno DJs removed from club and festival line-ups amid sexual misconduct allegations
7·8 months agoWe had a really long discussion going on in our techno whatsapp groups about that and it is all the more shocking as most of us (including the women) felt that techno is mostly a safe space from this kind of thing. Glad the organizers took action.
Zed is quite impressive, it opens like instantly when you double click it.
VS Codium on the other hand takes a few seconds to display everything correctly. Yes once its open it speeds up and is not that slow anymore, but compared to Zed it does still feel very heavy.
It is better to explode, than to fade away

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why do russian parents insist on being treated to home cooked meals?
7·8 months agoI have many russian (+ukrainian/kazakhstan etc.) friends and in fact they have a somewhat different attitude to food and restaurants as compared to europeans.
From my point of view they enjoy preparing food together, everyone brings something with them (salad, pickles, vodka… all of course self made), whereas in european countries I feel its more expected that the host provides the food already on the table or you go to a restaurant.
I cant smell ants but I can “smell” formic acid. Even diluted formic acid is so much more pungent and terrible then vinegar, so I doubt its that…

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL that people in Los Angeles live completely surrounded by trafficEnglish
12·9 months agoI have lived not between one but two major train lines (they were diverting from a common station), the one on the backside of the house was maybe 10m away, the one from the terrace was a lazy stone throw away. This was in Zürich and the trains there are massive, frequent S-Bahns but also freight trains (all of them electric):
You dont really hear them at all, I sometimes was shocked because there was a fast train coming from behind and I didnt hear it until it was right next to me.
There was 2 days a year, when in the night the rails were grinded, I could hear that and it took maybe 1-2 hours of my sleep, but it was announced weeks in advance.
The rails can emit a screeching sound, but that is usually well blocked by the house.
In contrast I have also lived on the side of a “main street” of a rather small village, maybe 10k inhabitants, that shit was unbearable. You heard everything the motor sound, the tires, the honks, the brakes, the music, trucks hitting a pothole would wake me up every night and so would motorcycles.
It is not a predictable woooOOoooosh like a train every half an hour, but instead an assortment of the worst combination of sounds possible that came and went all through the night. When “rush hour” set in at 6 in the morning you could forget to sleep, even on weekends.
There already was a 30km/h speed limit and a speed camera to curb the noise but it still was batshit. I moved 6 months in because I legitimately developed anger issues fueled by sleep deprivation.

4·10 months agoWhile a plasma is far from an ideal gas:
pV=nRT
p is the pressure, T the temperature, when you increase the pressure while keeping everything else the same, you increase the temperature aswell. The density here is the colloquial term for pressure.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL why María Corina Machado is relevant in the whole Venezuela thingEnglish
32·10 months agoTBH the nobel peace committee awarding their prize to one party in an already tensioned environment was like pouring oil in fire.
They might not have started the war with it, but significantly contributed to normalizing actions that left 40 civilians dead, the violation of UN charta by abducting a foreign leader and now threats to Greenland, Cuba, Columbia etc. they literally sparked a global crisis.
Usually they need like 5-50 years to award someone their stupid prize, but this time it was only weeks after Trump started talking about Venezuela.
If we had any spine left we would sanction the shit out of this disgrace of a committee. Honestly they need prison time and all their funds for 100 years taken from them and invested into stabilizing everything again. Maybe then in 2125 they are more careful not to award war criminals.
