Technology@lemmy.world•Manifestos, Fear, and ‘Loser Thinking’: Inside Proton’s AI ReckoningEnglish
11·7 hours agoFor the record, nowhere in this conversation did I say that I think people should move. You’re putting words in my mouth. I’ve only ever spoken about myself and my own plans.
That clarified, I do think people should not support a company with leadership like Proton’s.
You do not need a perfect or “better” (subjective) alternative to leave Proton. If you are not willing to accept an inconvenience for a moral stance, then it is no moral stance at all.
Just because I do not personally yet know what I will be switching to does not at all undermine my position. I do not think you are carrying on this conversation in good faith, so I’m going to end it here.

21·1 day agoIf you don’t take issue with the things raised in the article, then you do you. For me, they are enough for me to leave Proton. You came into this conversation asking me what alternatives I was interested in.

21·1 day agoI suppose I’m just confused at the purpose of the sentiment, then. Not having a perfect alternative is not a good excuse to continue supporting Proton with its current leadership and direction.

31·1 day agoHaven’t done enough research to say yet. Others have been suggesting in the thread. Might self host my passwords. Email seems the easiest switch with the most options. Cloud storage, not sure yet; I need a decent amount of it for crucial backups.

PC Gaming@lemmy.ca•Some Discord Messages Will Be Searchable on Google in December, Here's How to Opt OutEnglish
51·3 days agoNo need to speculate, there’s an article with valuable information on this very topic linked in the OP.
In a blog post, Discord laid out its plans to publish ‘Server Web Pages’ for every discoverable server on Discord by default. These are bespoke web pages that give a preview of a server’s contents before forcing users to hit the join button. There are already several of these pages live, typically for huge online games like Rust or Dead by Daylight. These pages will be discoverable on Google, and will display a summary of the discussions going on in the server.
But while these Server Web Pages will be going live next month, another update is coming in December that’ll allow answers to questions to appear in Google search. According to the blog post, “Answers to questions your members sent in public channels can be found in a web search, in their own words. Server admins decide which channels take part, and server members can choose whether their own messages appear. Usernames and avatars will not be shown alongside these messages.”

21·4 days agoI don’t disagree, but I think it’s a tough situation. Games have evolved so much and while there are many, many incredible indie games without all the bells and whistles of a modern cutting-edge games, I do think it’s still an important segment of the market and one that people are still buying.

32·4 days agoTo be honest, the price of most games is not any more prohibitively expensive than they always were, in fact in many cases they are much cheaper. It’s more than everything else in life in more expensive and wages aren’t keeping up.
