Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL "prop" in film and theater is short for "property"English
3·3 months agoThis intrigued me, but I can’t find any information about this. Except that on smaller productions especially back in the day, actors and actresses often worked in the prop department as well.

3·4 months agoOuf… I do that sometimes when writing guides or argumentative articles/texts. As a “this is relevant now for for this, but I will explain further later” or “this is relevant now, and I must explain it now so everything makes sense”. Especially if the subject does not require a section of its own, but its understanding is a prerequisite to understanding the wider point.

Steam Hardware@sopuli.xyz•Guide to Installing Fluxer on a Steam Deck
2·7 months agoHappy to hear that! It’s in my opinion an important part of a technical guide or how-to, to not only show the steps required to perform the task at hand. But to also help wonderers looking for solutions to tangential issues. As well as give enough explanations that next time similar issues need solving perhaps a guide won’t even be needed.

Technology@lemmy.world•Apple introduces Macbook Neo - cheaper Macbooks starting at $599English
1·7 months agoI have a 2015 13" Macbook Air with 4gb ram, and a new battery running, Mint with i3 wm and except for a few very unoptimised webpages I don’t experience any significant lagg when browsing. streaming 1920x1080 video without issues(the screen resolution is 1440x900 so no need for more) sure I only use it for writing on the go and minor surfing, anything heavier like video editing or Blender I do on my main desktop or my lenovo legion. This whole - anything less than 16gb ram is garbage in current year. Does not take into account that a lot of consumers and middle managers actually don’t do anything heavy on their computers.
I have made the conscious decision to try and not refer to it as AI, but predictive LLM or generative mimic models, to better reflect what they are. If we all manage to change our vernacular, perhaps we can make them silgtly less attractive to use for everything. Some might even feel less inclined to brag about using them for all their work.
Other options might be unethical guessing machines, deceptive echo models, or the classic from Wh40k Abominable Intelligence.

Wow that name invokes more than I feel it should, especially since it refers to continued Usenet adoption. Eternal September.
