As someone whose father didn’t give a shit about his daughter, please tell your brother he is a kick ass dude and give him a hug from this internet stranger.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Dude read the rules of woman only community and decided to post anywayEnglish
111·11 months agoMy experience has been the same and I’ve been on the internet since the mid-90s. I have always avoided voice chats unless with friends or trusted guildies and avoid things that will identify me as a woman because people can get so toxic. This happens in real life too, especially in gaming spaces. I’ve been laughed at when I said I taught my male partner how to play MTG until he confirmed it. I used to hear I’m “not a real woman” because I’ve been playing video games since I was a kid, it’s a lot better now, but it’s still there.
The womensstuff space is a huge breath of fresh air and I love having a space to speak about topics with fellow women. Quite a number of men have commented there and are very polite when they are corrected.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Where do you typically leave/read reviews
8·1 year agoThis isn’t the first time I’ve heard a similar story from a small business owner and I stopped using Yelp for the most part. I overheard a conversation that Yelp was really pushing the owner to subscribe for the same reasons. They got pretty aggressive about it. The owner said no and Yelp started boosting negative reviews to coerce the owner into subscribing. I checked Yelp vs Google reviews and there was a stark difference. Yelp was primarily negative reviews and Google was primarily positive reviews.
If they can hide negative reviews, they can also hide positive reviews.

Patient Gamers@sh.itjust.works•similar to the word of mouth post, what game did you not expect much from but loved it?
6·1 year agoEpistory
I found it on Steam and thought it looked interesting. It’s a typing game and I’m pretty good with typing, so I picked it up. I played games, but not much and usually it’s just World of Warcraft.
Once I started, I played that game for 12 hours straight. It had me hooked immediately. The visuals are absolutely beautiful, the story is intriguing, and the gameplay is so much fun. I do not finish games very often, but I finished that game in a single weekend.
I 100% agree with you. I’m extremely happy for friends who want and have kids and I’m extremely happy for friends who don’t want and don’t have kids. I do not keep people like her in my personal life and I was so happy when I switched teams.
She was very much into, you can only be a Real Womantm if you follow these guidelines:
- Make babies from your own body
- Marry a man
- Have long hair (she was even weirder about this part)
She would always say weird shit like that when looking directly at me; an unwed by choice, childless by choice, woman with a mohawk. She was just a bitter dick about a lot of stuff and big mess. In my experience, stuff like that usually comes from people who are generally unhappy with something in their own life, thankfully it’s not a common occurrence.
I’ve heard similar from people, usually the “you’ll change your mind when you find the right person”. I am from the US.
The worst was a conversation I had with coworkers. I mentioned I didn’t want kids because it would be really hard on my body to be pregnant after a near fatal car crash (back broken and lost a major organ). One gal said she thinks all women should have a baby. So I said, if I change my mind I can always adopt. She said “I think all women should have their own baby, it makes you a real woman. Adopting isn’t the same as having your own, there is not the same level of love there”. Worst part, she said this in front of another coworker who was adopted from a not great situation into a very loving and supportive family.
She was a misogynistic asshat about other things too.
I saw this is Boston just last week, my first view of it was the second picture. I mentioned to my partner that it looked like a sex act. I’m so glad I’m not the only one who sees that.
I am not a doctor and if it does get worse you should talk to one.
That said, I usually get a rash a day or two after a Covid vaccination. It’s happened almost every time I get one. I’ve had welts on my forehead and up and down my legs. I have asked my doctor about it because I was very concerned at first. He said as long as it doesn’t happen within 4 hours and I do not have any breathing issues, it’s not a problem. I do have very sensitive skin and break out into hives with a lot of things like fragrances and certain fabrics.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is anyone NOT steaming their Music?
1·1 year agoI don’t stream very often, when I do I use Apple Music because I have the discounted package subscription. Even then, I typically only stream specific punk playlists. Otherwise, I listen to the MP3s I ripped from my CDs or downloaded 20 years ago.
I also usually listen to the radio in the car. A local station plays a lot of the stuff I like (Green Day, Social Distortion, Ramones etc) and mixes in new stuff. Plus, I live so close to the southern US border, sometimes they throw in some local Mexican rock band.

Star Trek Social Club@startrek.website•Is Star Trek Discovery that bad?English
5·1 year agoIt’s not my favorite Trek, but I do like Discovery. That said, your summary is 100% accurate and emphasizes my least favorite parts of the show.

Omg thank you so much for providing that first link. I’ve wanted to try Linux and to run a home server, but I am like OP. I’m not as tech illiterate as most, but I also don’t know nearly as much as others here. I know just enough to not fuck up my pc, but I had trouble finding a start from the basics instructions.
The Linux skill challenge looks like exactly what I wanted,
