  • I gave up on Mint Cinnamon when I was trying to get my new build running due to persistent issues with tearing no matter what I tried. In my case, the issue appeared to be X11 so the recommendations I read pushed me to a Wayland based distro. After switching to Fedora Workstation (i.e., GNOME DE), I was able to easily enable VRR and HDR and now I never get tearing anymore; even with more graphics intensive games like CP 2077 and Enshrouded. Typically, I enable V-sync and/or a framerate cap and run games in fullscreen or borderless (preferred since it is less likely to freeze the display when I alt-tab).

I am not sure this is the minimum latency route as you mention but it solved 100% of my other issue and has been rock solid for gaming. GNOME seems to be a deal breaker for many, and possibly you as well, based on the comment about tiling window managers. Just figured I would share my own experience in the hopes it might be helpful.

  • I’ll take the bait. This is a classic AV rack setup which is a relic of the bygone era. Looks like a pretty typical configuration with a Receiver/amplifier, CD player, Laser disc player(?), double tape deck, and a VHS Cassette player. And of course you have to have the colossal speakers to accompany this technological tour de force from the early 90s. The little box may be a headphone amp but not sure.

Once you had all of this, you officially made it. I never quite did and this is one of my many regrets. I will go back to the nursing home now…

  • Had this bad-boy since like 2015 and its finally starting to misclick on occasion. Shame I didn’t buy a backup and Anker stopped making them a while back since the DS-2368 was the best budget gaming mouse I have ever found for my hand size and grip. I have tried about 4 other models with similar profile and nothing quite touches it. Going to be a sad day when it finally gives up and dies. Similarly to what you mention, the Basilisk V3 is also the closest fit and it has decent linux support so that is my backup plan.

  • My kid has been playing this game for a while and loves it but this update has been nothing but trouble. We had the settings dialed in and running great on his Linux PC and now it runs like absolute drek and all of the road-signs are blank (odd issue) and the dashboard inside of the cars are fuzzed out and super blurry. Tried adjusting the settings to get the FPS back to about where they were (75@1080p) but no idea what needs to be changed to fix the other issues. Apparently there were a ton of complaints already posted so hopefully the devs will do a hotfix or something.

  • You beat me to it. I loved my Dreamcast. It had so many great innovations like the VMUs, those chonky controllers, high density discs, and some really excellent games. If you picked up a VGA box it could also display on a PC monitor and you got super crisp video output…I played a ton of Phantasy Star Online and this was the ideal setup. Sadly, Sega screwed up their timing on the release since the PS2 was around the same time, if I recall correctly, and I think that is what ended their contention as a serious console maker since I am sure they lost bucket-loads of money.

I finally unloaded my DC about 6 years ago during a yard sale to a console collector…ahh well, good times.

  • Another one to consider if you prefer less intense (i.e. frustrating) combat is Swords N Magic and Stuff. It’s on Steam in early access and is a steal for about $25. It offers the large open world and tons of exploration along with a variety of play-style options, crafting, and farming. The only thing it doesn’t really seem to offer is the over-arching narrative but there is definitely lore to discover along the way.

  • This may be one of the most repulsive human beings in US politics (top 10 for sure). I lived in SC when she started her run for the national stage and she was simping for everyone that would give her air-time. Then she got in a car accident and the other driver was killed and Mace wouldn’t shut up about how it “was God’s plan that she survive and run”. I am so glad she failed and is losing her spot for now at least, I wish her only the worst.

  • Thank you kind stranger, I did not know about that command and will try it out. I typically avoid alt-tab with fullscreen in games for this reason and have to force quit the applications since the screen will be frozen.

I still tend to see an issue with setting up resolution and window settings on new games where the screen will stop refreshing once I commit the change and then I have to close the application and restart it to continue. I guess I could stick with windowed but it was my understanding that variable refresh rate only really works in full screen mode.

  • I decided to try the demo for “Zero Parades” just because it sounded interesting and I thoroughly enjoyed Disco. I think the download time was longer than my playtime and I ultimately uninstalled it since the demo provided an experience that is visually similar to Disco but I lost all desire to play it after a few minutes of shit voice acting and weird new game mechanics that made no sense to me. I am keeping an eye on a few other projects from the original Disco devs such as Tangerine Antarctic so here is hoping one of them puts together a worthwhile game with a new spin on this style. I have to recommend Esoteric Ebb for anyone who was a fan of Disco and wants that kind of experience in a more traditional fantasy setting. I made it to Election day and have a bit of final stuff to do and I will be looking for another game but this has been every bit as good as Disco in my opinion.

  • I don’t “need” to really…just noticed that there is a newer version with added functionality and was curious about the process since I had never done it before. I have been using basic keyboards like membrane and chichlet styles but I have been interested in getting a mechanical model for a long time. Finally decided to go for it after having to reset my 13 year old MS curve for the 3rd time this week in order to log into my computer.

So this also purges one more element of the despicable microslop ecosystem from my life and gives me what is shaping up to be a better typing experience as well. Based on the feedback, it looks like I should just hold off on making any changes until something more groundbreaking or critical needs to be done to my keeb.

  • You bring up another important positive for the instant pot: when I wash the rice, I tend to scrub hand-fulls between my fingers under running water and swirl it around as the bowl fills. Since the inner pot is stainless steel, I am not worried about damaging a non-stick coating like you tend to see on other rice cookers. Additionally, once the cooking cycle is complete, I have learned that letting the pressure drop over a period of about 10 mins before venting helps release the rice from the bottom of the inner bowl so sticking isn’t really a problem and I never get any burnt rice either.

The one thing I am not sure about is how well the rice would keep if it is left on warm all day like you describe for households that make a large batch for multiple meals. I typically make just enough for the meal at hand and some leftovers for fried rice later so I suppose the instant pot serves it purpose well but it may not be the solution for everyone.

  • This is really interesting regarding the extra water and I suppose it makes sense with the more basic models that have a vent hole. I have been using an Instant Pot for a bunch of years now and have a custom pressure cooking setting that gives me fluffy and perfect brown rice using water at a 1:1 ratio. I believe the cook time must be slightly longer than the white rice setting(default button). 21 mins and about 10 mins to cooldown before venting gets perfect results 100% of the time.
I have been tempted to invest in a more traditional cooker like a Zojirushi thanks in large part to “Uncle Roger” but paid $45 for the Instant Pot and I don’t really use it for anything else.
