more like, you need to hit a goal at the bottom of a funnel-shaped pit, but you’re in a car driving in circles on the walls of the funnel at 100mph, and anything going 150 mph shoots out of the top of the funnel. aim isn’t the problem, the shape of the funnel will take care of that. the issue is to get to the bottom you have to kick the ball backward hard enough to cancel out the speed of the car, i.e. 100mph, whereas to launch out of the pit, you only have to kick the ball forward at 50mph. if you kick backwards at 50mph, the ball will just keep circling the pit at 50mph; it might eventually reach the bottom but it will take a long time

  • It was hot when I first bit it, hot as a glede, and my mouth was scorched, so that I doubt if ever again I shall be free of the pain of it. Yet even as I write it is cooled, and it seemeth to shrink, though it loseth neither its beauty nor its shape… But for my part I will risk no hurt to this thing: of all the works of ranching the only fair. It is precious to me, though I buy it with great pain.

  • there’s actually new research saying prototaxites may not have been fungi, but belonged to an entirely separate kingdom that’s now extinct. one of the defining characteristics of fungi are that their cell walls contain chitin, the same stuff that makes arthropod shells. prototaxites was found not to contain any chitin, while other ancient fungi of the same age as prototaxites already did, so it’s not a feature of fungi that was adapted later. prototaxites was also found to contain microscopic structures that don’t exist in any known fungus species

edit: damn, someone beat me to it while I was trying to find the details
