All my stuff is just configs anyway, so my backup is a Git commit. Lighter than a full snapshot. My server can be restarted with like 50mbs of information.
Docker images are images so disposable. All my files and databases are on my NAS which is a ZFS pool mirrored and with a weekly backup to a secondary NAS also mirrored. Plus I have an offsite cloud backup of everything. There isnt really anything on my server that matters other than some configs, scripts and ymls. Which by commiting to my Gitea, are all on my NAS with the rest of my data.
I still feel like Proxmox just invites you to tinker and fiddle with stuff that should be set and forget. Or overcomplexify your setup with too many moving parts.
For public stuff I just use a VPS. Better internet connection than at home, high availability and DDOS protection. Otherwise, an LXC with good firewall rules and a well configured reverse proxy should be sufficient.

Honestly, you are right it didn’t. CS majors get way less work than Software Engineers where I live. CS is mostly academic and not practical. Maybe different elsewhere, but not a golden ticket. I don’t like working with compsci grads because they don’t know how to make stuff. They don’t know best practices or how to make reusable code and features. Software engineers on the other hand, actually useful contributors.
Nevertheless, Software engineering, just like other engineering fields, way way way over saturated. Mechanical and electrical engineers in places like Toronto are just working Starbucks. You gotta be top of class or there’s nothing for you.
The worst part is I was just starting to name these things “SI” but not for that reason. I think “Simulated Intelligence” is the best description of these chat bots.

That’s kind of the funniest part in fact: these companies are destroying their own viable business segments. Bing was a huge growth driver for Microsoft. Less clicks is bad for them. They make more money on Bing ads than they do on LLMs. Same with Google.
Reddit is getting crushed atm after it sold access to its data to train models. Chat bots make visiting these websites pointless, without replacing that traffic with anything they can meaningfully monetize.
The more popular Gemini is, the less money Google will make. The market has already shown how much people are willing to pay for Ai subscriptions, and it isn’t all that much. None of these companies have found a way to make ads viable in LLMs either. They are beyond self sabotaging themselves at this point. It really is a doom loop.
