  • Captain Picard and his brother were sent off to an old fashioned English boarding school by their luddite father that didn’t allow them to transport home in the evening or weekends, thus their English accents (my head canon).

Picard’s brother became indoctrinated into the same fucked up luddite philosophy and didn’t even allow 24th century fire safety technology in his home, leading to the death of him, his wife and his son due to a fire (actual canon).

  • My latest account just got its first warning.

There’s a pretty horrific story this week in the UK about a guy with a severe mental disability who threw a child into a crocodile pen at a wildlife park.

Someone said they think anyone who does that should be put in front of a firing squad.

I replied that we shouldn’t be shooting disabled people. I got a warning for implying exactly the opposite of what I was arguing, while the original comment (which I reported after getting my warning), is still up 48 hours later.

  • Whilst we’re at it can someone explain;

    A) a photon travels at the speed of light because it is massless, right? But doesn’t E=mc² teach us that mass and energy are somewhat interchangeable? How can a photon have energy but no mass?

    B) I’m willing to accept it as fact when smarter people tell me that FTL is impossible because, amongst other things, it will break causality. It makes perfect sense to me that the universe needs to have some unbreakable rules for things to remain consistent. But I’ve never been able to grasp exactly why it would break causality.

  • Men and women. Males and females. Girls and boys. People are obsessed with gender to the point they forget we’re all just human.

Last night I was watching these two chuds watch one of my favourite movies (Children of Men) and one of them, responding to Julianne Moore’s character’s behaviour said “Ah, I HATE women like that!” and it genuinely caused my brain to skip a beat. There was nothing about the character’s actions that was specific to female behaviour. I don’t understand why he couldn’t have said “I hate PEOPLE like that.”

I am an aspiring writer. I did a beta reader swap with one of my colleagues who just like me would like to be a sci-fi author. He was desperate to know how I was “so good” at writing women. Dude, lol, it’s not hard. Literally all you have to do to avoid all the men-writing-women pitfalls is remember that women are human beings first and women second, with all the same desires, hopes and fears as men.

  • People seem to think belief (or lack thereof) is a one dimensional line.

    Theism - Agnosticism - Atheism

But it’s more like the political compass with Theism - Atheism on one axis and Gnostism - Agnosticism on the other.

Theism/Atheism is a comment on whether you believe in god(s).

Gnostism/Agnosticism is a comment on how strongly you hold that belief (or lack of belief).

Are you absolutely certain there’s no god? Then you’re a gnostic atheist. Believe in god in sort of a wishy-washy way? Then you’re an agnostic theist.

I’m a die hard atheist, but I also consider myself an agnostic. Because although there’s no evidence of a god it’s also impossible to prove a negative.

To be a gnostic atheist would actually take a leap of faith I’m not willing to risk.

  • I’m not American… but I am Scottish/British and I’ve never quite understood the whole being proud of your country thing.

Unless one is a hypocrite it’s always been clear to me that if you’re going to be proud of all the good shit your country has done you’ve also got to be ashamed of all the bad shit.

And with a few centuries of colonialism under the UK’s belt (and before anyone says different, no, Scotland very much partook and benefited from it) I seriously don’t have the emotional fortitude to feel that much shame.

Feeling pride in your culture? In your community? Fine. But in your nation state? A bunch of administrators with delusions of grandeur wrapped in a flag? I’d argue that’s unnatural because nation states in no way played a role in our evolutionary psychology.

Maybe I’d feel different if I was born in a wee inoffensive country somewhere… but I hope not. Nation states are pragmatically necessary but I don’t think we should be getting too invested in them.
