  • When I lived in India, I never voted, never felt like voting either because the options were far right corrupt goons or center right corrupt goons. And I believe it’s the same in US.

Now that I live in the Netherlands, I can vote for SP or Pirate Party or PvdA or Green Left. I actually have parties with whom my ideologies align and I can vote for what I feel. And I already did once.

The debate isn’t as black and white. In a system where electoral systems are relevant and reflect your beliefs sure go ahead and vote. But in places where this isn’t the case, I don’t see how voting is useful or fulfilling.

  • There could be multiple reasons for this.

    1. The bots are used only for generating engagement and not posting. So engagements went down, posts didn’t.
    2. The bots are used on Twitter and not on Reddit so twitter was impacted but reddit wasn’t. Kinda likely considering twitter loves bots and reddit has been cracking down on them.
    3. Engagement is not a very transparent metric, and depends on a lot of factors like when content is posted, the quality of the content, seasknality, etc. There can be multiple things affecting engagement.

You know what, I have been working in Social listening (analysis of social media) for the last 8 or so years and since morning I have been seeing this claim about Russian data centers and activity on r/Conservative, and it has been smelling of propaganda and annoying me all day.

It’s almost 1 am in the morning and I just realised I have the tools to prove or disprove this. So I got up and in 5 minutes I was able get the data.

Americans are really getting real good at propaganda for sure.

Did you know at least 6 Marvel movies have worked closely with American military?

Sure a random thread on reddit or lemmy is the real propaganda.

Edit : Unless of course it’s the make believe parliament game on /pol/.

Edit 2: It’s really getting hard to keep track of what’s propaganda and what’s not these days.

  • I believe all advertising exists to manipulate people. Behaviour change is a key aspect of marketing, from how things are kept at a store shelf, to putting the right hoarding on the right street, it’s all done to guide consumer choice in a profitable way.

Advertising was never about giving you information, it was to make you feel cigarettes are cool or you need an more expensive toothbrush to be more confident. Advertising moved away from giving you information to ‘connecting with consumers on an emotional level’ decades before the Internet.

While yes information age has made advertising a lot more effective than it was 25 years ago, but brands were still trying to get you get the most money out of you back then, same as today, only their tools of doing so have improved vastly.
