Try not to think like this because when it does happen, it won’t be anything like what you’ve imagined. I always thought it would be a sudden, heartbreaking thing, but instead it was a year long slide into cat-dementia. I was lucky in that he stopped being his usual self months before it happened, giving me time to wind down my emotions when the day finally came.

1·2 months agoMy parents still have one that’s probably older than I am. I figured it’s just some gimmick lock from back in the day that was marketed as “high security” because of the wierd looking key. They have a thing about this, y’know how some people have to have some kinda edge on the “rest of the plebs”, can’t just be normal and buy a normal lock, no they gotta buy… this thing.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Any self-hostable alternative to playit.gg for easily exposing local game servers to the public internet?English
1·2 months agoYou probably don’t want to do this. People will get salty and DDOS your server. I ran a KF2 server for like 5 years and eventually the traffic overwhelmed my connection and I had to stop.
I wish I knew. I spoke to my brother about this a while ago, and told him I’d never gone to a doctor because I always thought it was a “strength of will” thing. He told me that was insane. First thing he did was get to a doctor and get prescribed. The thought never crossed my mind.
Similarly I was watching some show with my partner and this guy in the show talks derisively to he daughter: “I bought you your anti-di-pressants, what more do you want?” And he’s stressing the word, like he believes it’s some kinda party drug. I think that mentality is a very real thing and hits other areas like birth control too. “I didn’t have this for ME and thus I resent you taking the easy way out!” seems to be the thought process.

2·4 months agoThis used to confuse so many people because I swapped the hard drive for a 120 gig SSD. So I then had a 120 gig “60 gig” PS3. “the slim model?” No, the fat one “But then what model had…?” Yeah it was a pain to explain to some people what exactly it was.

I would say no, because he never was a part of the original. IIRC, he’s a copy of this person’s memories before they even died, so he forked the progression of memories? The original would have lived, and died, with no continuity going over to the clone. The clone, upon receiving these memories, believes himself to be the original, but he’s wrong.
He was not even alive to begin with. Literally a robot following the instructions left by a recording of a human mind. He just thought he was a real human because the recording said/believed so.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is there hope for humanity? Or are we just destined or designed to wipe our own selves out?
2·4 months agoHumans live and have lived and will live in every conceivable place on this planet. What’s gonna get wiped out is 99% of profits being made right now. We’ll survive, but our institutions won’t.
Always always check what version of blender the tutorial is for! Later versions have automated and fixed so much annoying shit that you had to do/fix manually in older versions. Blender 5.1 is way different to 2.8! Also it doesn’t matter what menu it’s in because you can just search for that tool with the search function, bind it to spacebar.
Blender is actually amazing now (>5.0) and I feel like lots of people tried 2.8 and got scared because it was janky and it turned them off Blender forever.
Everybody laughing at this comment needs to know that THIS DOES HAPPEN. Ex-employee had to return her laptop, so we send a UPS return label via e-mail. She shows up at the UPS store with the laptop in hand and is surprised when they tell her it needs to be in a box. We received the laptop inside the wildest combination of two boxes taped back-to-back and filled with garbage that didn’t even form effective packing material.
Some people have literally never shipped anything in their life before, despite being 30 🤷
Inertia. IPv4 still works, every service on the internet still available over it. You can just be lazy and things will be ok.
Complexity. IPv6 is complex in the areas where v4 sucks. Ran out of address space? Here’s a lot more address space. Multiple routers offering multiple routes? Just grab them all, have as many addresses as you want. No method to find peers on the same subnet? Here’s like three methods to find peers on the subnet. All this is stuff you gotta learn!
Workarounds. Initially, ISPs thought that people turned their PC off at night and they’d get the IP address back. Then, they were leaving multiple devices on all day! So they came up with a hack that pretends everyone is behind one IP address, now all your devices are just one IP. But that IP still stays up and occupied all the time, they’re not getting it back, so they put all their customers under another (CG)NAT. It’s just NAT all the way down whenever they run out, and this way they never run out.
You’re missing the point. It is “just” the act of downloading and installing, which were seen as normal things to do. However, by calling it “sideloading” they can then attach any meaning, any implication they wish. This is now something different and wierd, not something normal people do, does your mom sideload? I’m pretty sure the battle for control of your phone that you bought was lost as soon as we allowed them to call it sideloading.
I learned about these from the projectionist where I worked, back when I was a kid. When they’d get taken out of a projector and thrown in the garbage, he’d smash them on the ground to get the tungsten electrodes out. Apparently they both looked cool, like the surface of the moon, and sold for a lot!
