  • Man, this is a great example of “you’re not wrong, you’re just an asshole”.

Does the internet in general(not just lemmy) constantly feed that negativity bias? Oh, absolutely. Hard agree that’s probably one of the biggest problems in society in general right now.

Have people in general and especially in the west list perspective because we’ve had it so good for awhile? Hoo boy, hard agree again.

But uhh… yeah, this is a shitpost community. Time and place. Also, I know it seems a bit pedantic, but it is important; science doesn’t “prove” shit. Science is a method and a tool to help us better refine knowledge. It’s important you actually point to the studies.

  • Y’all, this is one of those articles worth reading right quick. The title is… well, bad. They were looking more at the “quality” rather than quantity of social media usage. The findings were more about the reinforcement of the user’s state rather than social media itself being bad. Sure, the algorithm will push things, but your algorithm is primarily gonna push what it needs to keep you engaged with itself, and what you engage with will be influenced by your state of mind/mood. If you’re already depressed, you’re probably gonna reinforce that via the algorithm. Same deal with positive outlooks. Neuroplasticity and all that.

The researchers also bring up a good point about calling into question the recommendation to limit the amount of time on social media with the idea of mitigating the negative effects. Much like [alcohol] prohibition in the US, a ban on social media usage does nothing to teach us a more wise and healthy approach, nor is it something realistic for the general population.

In fact, if we practice abstention in such a way, those that would use it for malignant purposes would make it worse. I think a good example of that is cryptocurrency. Crypto isn’t inherently bad, but boy did it get super maligned by any left-leaning space. There are plenty of useful things we could do with crypto, especially now with the hostile behavior of many currency-issuing states, but since crypto was mostly abandoned by leftist spaces, scams, commodification, speculation, and other hyper-capitalist bullshit abounds in the crypto space.

Do we really want to cede the further development of social media to malignant dickheads via unwitting abstention? Or will we take the time to actually learn how to wisely approach the tools we have right in front of us?

  • … that’s kind of silly. The methodology is indeed in the article. Why would you expect the internet to behave the same way as a newspaper? If you care about the methodology of the study, why wouldn’t you just read the article anyway?

However, I do think you at least have a point about how these aggregate feeds work in relation to how information is presented/understood. The post here is a good example of the title being a woefully inadequate descriptor of it’s content, despite being generally ‘fine’. People would probably draw inaccurate conclusions upon only reading the title, but like, we’re already pretty aware of this phenomenon by now, aren’t we?

  • Fuck yeah, we need way more of this attitude. Like, sure, there are people out there that do an apology tour as a grift, whatever, but it’s absolutely insane how often people see someone legitimately trying to change and be better and will immediately shit on them like they need to be punished immediately. Do we really want to disincentivise people to change for the better?

I’m 100% unironically for literally punching nazis/fascists when they’re doing their bullshit in public. The number one goal any rational person would have for a fascist is for that fascist to not exist. The best-case scenario for this is for them to no longer to be a fascist and renouncing fascism altogether. We must keep in mind that we must focus our anger on the system, not the people. That means publicly and viciously opposing fascism, but also giving people a way to leave that movement. You don’t destroy the movement by opposing it alone, you must also starve it of it’s members. If enough people leave a movement, that movement loses it’s power. I’m using fascism as an obviously extreme example, but the principle(s) applies for any kind of malignant behavior/system.

When someone tries to leave some hateful bullshit behind, pull that motherfucker in. You lose an enemy and gain a friend. +2, bb!

  • Yeah, seriously, the whole thing with generalizations in the face of suggested individual action is just so silly. We all know we need to hold billionaires/corporations accountable for their bullshit, energy subsides for fucking oil need to go away like yesterday, citizens United needs to be overturned by legislation, members of congress taking bribes from plastic and energy companies and making legislative decisions as a result need to straight up go to prison, etc. But wtf is the normal, everyday person actually gonna do about it? Call their representatives that may or may not listen because they’re a partisan hack? Good one.

The cliché of getting involved locally is the correct course of action. It’s not throwing molotovs in DC, it’s getting to know your local farmers and getting food from them instead of shipped around the globe five times at some supermarket owned by a giant corporation. Get more trees planted in your neighborhood. Start some butterfly sanctuaries. Start a movement to ban egregiously wasteful lawns in your municipality. Get a coalition of people who pay attention and can mob city hall if/when the city council tries to pull some bullshit deals about yet another fucking data center. Establish better water conservation with your neighbors. This is what the actual, real, legitimate revolution looks like. It doesn’t start with “AND I TOOK OUT MY GUN AT THE GUBMINT!”, it starts with “My neighbors and I started our own little kinda country. ¯_(ツ)_/¯”

  • Yeah, I think I generally agree with you in the end, but I think it’s at least worth mentioning that he would effectively be asking other members of the military to get themselves court martialed as well. On top of that, he’d be unintentionally asking to set a precedence of the military getting involved in politics. So my initial reaction is to agree with you and say he should have called on others in the military to join him, because it is indeed that dire, but he may be right to refrain from optically encouraging others to cross the Rubicon.

Either way, I think you bring up a good point in the identification of Trump as a domestic enemy that those in the armed forces swear an oath to defend the constitution from. I wonder if that was his way of attempting to walk that line carefully. Definitely not an easy decision to make in any capacity.

  • Yeah, but it usually won’t get as much engagement. The good things that are happening to this day don’t really get much coverage, so it can be easy to despair and become pessimistic. There are certainly some awful things happening in the world, but that’s basically always been true. We’re not helpless to overcome the systems of oppression that hold us down/back. It’s in our nature as humans to work together and there are plenty of movements out there already working tirelessly to make the world a better place. Did you know we can pretty safely say we’ve avoided the absolute worst possible scenario of climate change? As in, it’s still getting worse right now and we’ve still got a hell of a fight right in front of us, but we’ve made actual real progress despite all the current bullshit. Fighting the systems creating climate change and winning is possible. Not only is a better world possible, but people are actively coming together to make it happen. People are being pulled out of poverty, plastic in the oceans are getting cleaned up, harm reduction programs are popping up everywhere, malnutrition is still on the decline, there are plenty of good things happening in the world. It being the nature of humans to work together and it generally being in the best interest of everyone for us to all to work together, I see no reason to believe the work for good will even slow down.

  • Fuck yeah, you’re on a goddamn roll. The best way to fight your enemies is to turn them into friends. The best way to fight racists is to get them to no longer be racist. Best way to fight nazis is to get them to not be a nazi. Etc. If you don’t give them any opportunity to reform, then why the fuck would you expect them to change??? Normalize the fuck out of the above attitude.
