It’s the internet, anyone can lie but I’ve been living an increasingly ethical life for about a quarter century after reading No Logo as an angsty teen.

I think our big disagreement here may be what we consider “doing something.” I personally think “raising awareness” is just an excuse to not actually do any of the work or make any of the sacrifices a cause requires. Similarly, for many it seems “doing politics” isn’t actually the doorknocking, phone banking, signature getting etc but instead is mostly being insufferable online (which frankly, feels pretty counterproductive but that’s a whole different kettle of fish) and maybe loudly boycotting a marginal brand/comedian/etc whom they didn’t really like in the first place. (Boycotts of stuff we actually like… Well, I remember when all the radio stations and bars said they would never play Michael Jackson again. That didn’t last.)

But hey, maybe you aren’t buying from some of the worst places, so that’s nice, though your original statements didn’t at all make that clear, and in fact the first “but you participate in society” reallyade it seem like you don’t see a way to participate in society while mostly avoiding sweatshops… Anyway, keep boycotting fast fashion, even if fast fashion has mostly been couched in environmental terms because that’s a cause spoiled first worlders know affects us…

Estimates seem to vary but I’ve found a good few at 3 billion total from the wealthiest 200 Californians.

Also, given the article noted that:

Departing billionaires slashed projected one-time revenue from $100 billion to $40 billion, with Page and Brin’s exits alone costing California $26.7 billion.

That implies the current tax revenue from billionaires would drop 60 or so percent. So, presumably tax revenue drops from 3 to 1.2 billion, just based on current flights (and ignoring knock on effects.)

So, no one else leaves and we don’t count knock on effects, I’d guess it’d take ~ 21 or so years before this starts cutting. But, of course, knock on effects (folks decamp to say, Texas which seems to be snagging as many once Californian businesses as possible…) It’s going to be a very interesting, depressing experiment. (Really feels like a race to the bottom but that’s the America we know and,uhhh, love?)

Mad for regular people money. From what I’ve read, what they’ve spent is a small fraction of what said tax would cost them (though if you’ve seen different, I love new info!)

A person is easy to move, a warehouse less so.

These folks don’t usually have warehouses, but whatever, say physical infrastructure. All that can stay, the boss can roll out, rock in Texas and take their private jet to and fro as needed. (Or, do their stuff remotely. I doubt Thiel is walking through cubicles etc.)

The worst case scenario for California of the mythical “Wealth Flight” is a bunch of parasites moving elsewhere.

The worst case is that the tax revenue that those billionaires bring (which sure, in a moral vacuum should probably be higher) goes elsewhere leaving California needing to plug the fiscal gap by taxing less wealthy folks or eliminating/reducing services.

I wonder how many would have to move before the tax actually becomes revenue negative (compared to not being implemented.)

Against them but also wearing their products, which is even worse. What’s the point of being “against” something then? It’s like saying you’re “against” trump but sitting out the elections.

I dunno, everyone says this of the issues about which they care but other ones are too large etc.

For example, do you feel the same way about say, sweatshop clothes? In that we should take a stand,pick a stand or fuck off?

Personally, I feel the 12 year olds making the most of the clothes I see when I walk down the street is much more important than most national issues in my country AND is something where individual action really matters but, it’s also an issue that requires actual sacrifice and work. Much easier to be angry at people online over politics…

Thanks for fighting the good fight! A couple of thoughts from a former greasy salesman:

A) Are you meeting what OP needs or wants? OP says they’re trying to quit reddit because they’re wasting their life there. If they’re trying to quit social media, not sure recommending a different style of social media is going to help.

B) Probably best to come in ready for typical responses e.g., “there’s no content!” “Too many crazies” (say what you will, until you learn to avoid .ml etc, the fediverse can really suck for the vast majority of “normal” folks.)

C) Maybe have good examples of communities, instances or whatever that you want to recommend. Being able to point to concrete examples etc always helps!

I generally prefer using as low res as I can, help w fediverse costs and I don’t know what other folks’ data situation is…

People have answered pretty well but I’d also come at it from a different angle, the EU also probably wants ways to deepen connections without full blown membership. (Consider the headaches that Orban caused for years.) In an era that looks increasingly like it will be defined by great power rivalry, having the EU create a more nimble sort of partnership than full blown membership could be very attractive to many middle countries (especially in East Asia as countries reassess their security guarantees from America against China’s increasingly bellicose behaviour.)

As you note elsewhere, these are often highly upvoted and honestly, the fediverse is so small that without those posts, I worry about how much content there would be. (We can cry that people need to post more original content until our lungs give out but…)

So, I’d say this is probably a fine tuning issue. We probably want people to choose if they want to filter out as much content from reddit as possible, bot content only, mass reddit posters etc.
