I can’t argue against being ethical in media consumption being a waste of time in the sense that the tiny percentage of us that choose to boycott any given platform make no difference. But I think having ideals and following them is worthwhile and I will continue to do so.
But I was also sincere in my statement that I don’t think you (or anyone) has to share that concern. Those are my ideals. They don’t have to be yours and I don’t expect that of anyone.

My time I’d normally use for gaming has gone in to starting to learn FreeCAD, which I guess I could argue is an open world builder game.
Do we know if this is going to be implemented per device or it’s done via geolocation or something? I skimmed the article, didn’t seem to say besides “don’t get excited if you’re outside of Europe” or something to that effect. Basically wondering if this benefit can be gained in the future by importing a phone.
My dislike of Apple is… decades old. But Google sucks too. I need to dig into how Apple treats privacy (someone mentioned that it might not be great on another of these posts) and see how the software ecosystem outside of the Apple store shakes out. I’m hopefully several years out from needing a phone replacement, so I can wait and see how it goes.

Beehaw is my home in the fediverse, and I’m happy here. I like that they try to maintain a positive community. But if Beehaw left the fediverse, I wouldn’t come along. Which is a change from thinking I might last time I saw this topic come up.
If beehaw ends up in a silo I think it will just have too little to offer for me. And that’s ok. This isn’t about me, it’s about creating a safe space for your disenfranchised users.

Probably preaching to the choir in the largely tech savvy world that is the Threadiverse, but going to PSA nonetheless. If you’re concerned about privacy, don’t use anything associated with Google. Because IMO this is entirely unsurprising.
Commercial software: complete goals x, y, and z and get paid.
FOSS: Project of passion.
Short and black and white version: I’d rather use the software people are excited to make.
My take on what’s realistic: Things are rarely so simple. Commercial software will often (not always) be easier to use. I feel like most users don’t want to expend any more than minimal effort to effectively use their software (which I don’t think is unreasonable). So in those cases and for those users, easier = better.
Also, highly specialized commercial software might be better than any FOSS options. For example, there’s nothing in the FOSS world that can compete with the big players in commercial electronic medical records software.
So, while I love FOSS, and I find Capitalism problematic, sometimes commercial is better.
P.S: The response is more to the concept of the post. Your actual post is both well written and thought out and doesn’t feel at all like “black and white” thinking.
From what I’ve read (this reddit link, basically https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/15qfpfh/has_anyone_installed_a_different_version_of_linux/) the big issue with other distos, it sounds like to me, is a lack of driver support in older kernels. Which isn’t a distro specific problem. The other is device specific optimizations, which I agree Valve should share if they haven’t already.
Also, you specifically called out CentOS in your distro list. I don’t know if that was arbitrary or you have a specific vested interest in it, but CentOS is discontinued and will soon reach EOL (https://www.redhat.com/en/topics/linux/centos-linux-eol). Please don’t attempt to use it.
I read that! About it being the industry standard. The background on the developer is news to me.
I guess the question is, is 30% too much? Just because it’s the standard doesn’t mean it isn’t too high. But I’m not knowledgeable in the financial side of the gaming industry nor do I know what valve’s overhead is like so I truly don’t know the answer.

Alyx is still VR only game and must buy VR game, unless you mod it. Valve refused to release PC version.
It’s a matter of opinion if this is good or bad I guess, but I think VR specific titles are a good thing. More of an opportunity to take advantage of the medium rather than shoehorn the functionality on to a desktop game.

You can also setup a reverse proxy to deliver a different, empty site to a different dns entry by default. Use either a completely separate (as opposed to multidomain) cert for each, or a wildcard cert.
Jellyfin also supports using a custom path, instead of delivering at the root. Your reverse proxy would need to be configured accordingly.
