Direct democracy would be the most resistant form of government to eventual oligarchy. Another possibility could be that the citizens of a democratic society could be limited as to how much wealth they could own.

No, 2024 was. The fascists are in power now. They will postpone this election, alter the outcome or even just ignore the results and declare victory.
