I knew about Discord since the very beginning. But it felt always fishy. Why would they provide a service for frees? Teamspeak servers cost money on a monthly basis?

Over the time more and more small communities i liked to interact with were only accessible via Discord. Which was alright because you didnt even need an account to do it. Jump in, do the thing and fuck off.

At some point it was just convenient to make an account with an email adress i dont even remember anymore. Just to keep up with all the niche interest groups. Then a lot of them started to require my phone number. lmao. I just left those “servers”.

But ngl over the years i found some communities which will hurt to abandon. The network effect is real. But its maybe time to fuck off forever.

Uh, when was ever something fancy about Beats? V-Shape tuning with tons of bass and just some random chunks of metal to make it more weighty and with that pReMiUm feeling for ridiculous prices. That was my perception of the brand since its inception long before Apple aquired it. Since then i probably take it more seriously? Not enough to ever buy anything from them. But still.

I’d say it really depends on the game. But generally: yes.

To be clear Proton translates DX API calls to Vulkan so it works at all under Linux. But dxvk (directx to vulkan) is also a thing on Windows and can improve performance. Mostly because DX11 and older versions tended to be a lot more CPU bound. Prominent example would be GTA4 which to this date runs like ass out of the box even on the most potent gaming hardware. With dxvk it gets a lot better.

With that said i came across a few games over the years which just had a shitty or broken Vulkan implementation and using/translating DX was just better.

But if you really care, just try it out? Be sure to have some kind of performance overlay open like the Steam one or MangoHud. Play the game a few minutes with Vulkan and a few minutes with DX11. Maybe you see a bit more FPS, less utilization/powerdraw, better 1% lows, less stuttering, etc. Maybe its insignificant. Hard to tell beforehand without testing. But if you dont see or feel an issue in the first place you also could just ignore the technical specifics and just play the game.

I would be fine with that. But i couldnt recreate the approximation of the 2014 trailer in 10 years. I never had the pleasure to see a single cool planet of which i could hop off and do some mediocre space battle. Its just such a frustrating game and i really liked the original artstyle.

Anyway, i should really put NMS in my filterlist because it gets me angry and worked up every single time. Ugh. Stupid.

Yeah, thats a bit revisionist? I will always be mad what a fucking liar Sean Murray was pre-release. There is just no dancing around that fact. He also wasnt some suit from the publisher. He is credited as a programmer on the game at wikipedia(you know boots on the ground good guy). Almost every promise he uttered was broken. He was on the fucking Conan late night show and educated us on how hard they had it(and on top lied about every single feature the game would have).

And yeah, they redeemed themselves. But i have to say that 10 years later i still regret my purchase. I revisited the game every other year or so after several bombastic update trailers. I’m still not impressed or even entertained. Also they got rid of the only thing i ever really liked at release: the artstyle. Which makes me even more angry. Fuck this game. I should get a hold on myself. I should let it go after 10 years of free update. But seriosly fuck this game and fuck Sean Murray.

Yeah, but depending on where you live you can get some dirt cheap kit on the used market. Depending on who you know you probably could even get a headset gifted. I for sure tried to just give away my Rift S to friends.

I constantly see people in VR communities which are happy because they sniped a headset for 40 - 100 bucks. Which today is like premium controller money or depending on the game not even the price of a premium edition.

Best part is if you invest now for the first time you have tons of games of the last 10 years to play. VR still has a content issue. But not if you get that kind of backlog at once. Well, minus a few great games which were lost in time.

I liked it a lot and played through the entire thing in two sittings. It has a really great artstyle and nonverbal story telling. Yeah, its not super interactive when it comes to gameplay but it has some tricks up its sleeve over its run time to mix things up considerably. So i never got bored. The mechanics are never super deep but always feel really polished.

I’d say if you like that kind of game you will really like it. If you dont its maybe good enough to still win you over but there is still a high chance you will bounce of after the first few hours.

Oh, yeah and its really hardware hungry because UE5. Its one of the very few games i played through in 30FPS in recent years.

There are so many games i want really everyone to experience like Beyond Good & Evil or Psychonauts.

But i’m a racing game enjoyer at heart. So i’m going to namedrop NFS 3, 4 and the Test Drive Unlimeted PS2 version. The last name drop is no joke. Its the very best PS1 racing game physics which happen to be on a PS2 i ever experienced but on a ridiculously big map.

But the ultimate arcade racing game is imho Midnight Club 3. I grew up with the NFS games on PC. Through the years i went hardcore on racing sims. Have been an elitist. But this game pulled me back to the fun(complete lie, but i was told to sell the game to you, but i truly believe it would have been good enough to actually do that). But seriously i never had a PS2 when MC3 was relevant. Emulation of the PS2 took a really long time to render MC3 flawlessly. But now in 2026 its just great. You should really check it out if you have any itch to play a great arcade racer. It does so many things which feel so fresh to this day. So many events have unique scripted things happening. Its crazy that this still stands out over 20 years later.

misleading headline. if you use factory overclocked 5090 which can draw up to a 1000(!)watts its faster than the founders edition which is capped at 575watts.

Yeah, okay that sucks. But makes comparisons easier i guess? Nvidia wins at default unless you want good open source Linux drivers. Which arent a lot of people to be fair.

I really hope Intel will still release consumer GPUs in the future. The B580 was a pretty nice GPU at MSRP. But i couldnt even recommend it to anyone because it almost always was 30% above MSRP where i live. With that price you could have gotten just a better card in every metric.
