  • I don’t quite understand why people think Lemmy is social media aside from the fact that it’s similar to Reddit which is also not really social media (but likes to think it is), unless the definition of social media is so loose that any two people talking online is considered engaging in social media - in which case, just about everything is social media.

I am of the opinion that link aggregators are not social media. At least not any more than the comments section of a YouTube video or the chat of a call of duty lobby is considered social media.

  • I remember typing random combinations of letters and numbers into the hex color field on my marquee span text on my Geocities site when i was a kid and marveling at how it always seemed to yield a different result.

Anyway, as an edgelord 8 year old with unsupervised access to the internet I discovered that my hexcode is #DEATH or some shit like that, I honestly don’t remember what it was but I was fascinated with the color it produced at the time.

  • Homicide is about the only thing that they ever seriously investigate. If you’ve ever been robbed or raped, then you’ll know that they are laughably ineffective at catching and prosecuting the perpetrator, even when presented with evidence.

The very fact that these crimes are still committed speaks to the efficacy of a police deterrent, which is to say, none.

If you feel as if you cannot criticize your law enforcement, then law enforcement will inevitably become more and more corrupt over time. Everyone should scrutinize the fuck out of their local PD and never give them the benefit of the doubt on anything.

  • Wait, why do people actually believe that you need to be Force sensitive to activate a lightsaber?

You’re telling me Luke, who would not even begin asking questions about what the Force was for several more scenes, was handed a lightsaber from Ben Kenobi - a device he has never seen in person before, and activated it?

When Han solo cut open the belly of Luke’s tauntaun, was he using the Force to activate his lightsaber? Or was a delirious Luke on the brink of death helping him so that they both didn’t freeze to death?

The on/off switch is the only thing that actually makes any sense.

  • The thing I have learned recently attending industry events is that while what you are saying is technically feasible, it’s not as tantalizing as what the AI giants are promising. They are selling an all-in-one solution that was supposed to reduce costs and make skilled work idiot-proof.

To run a local model, they still need to have at least a few people on staff that know what the hell they’re doing to set it up and maintain it. Not exactly the silver bullet that they were expecting.

  • The only reason a Lunar base/habitat would be needed aside from just a scientific endeavor (no expectation of return on investment, just for the sake of knowledge itself) is that the escape velocity is much lower than on earth so it wouldn’t require as much energy to launch rockets and satellites. A shipyard on the moon could be a realistic case scenario.

But, we aren’t producing spacecraft at a scale where it would be economical to do so yet, and there’s still the logistical issue of getting the fuel to the moon to perform launches without some kind of space elevator - impractical and hazardous.

Will we get to that point someday? Most likely, but right now any attempt at a permanent moon habitat is doomed to fail. Case in point, if governments are struggling to provide the ISS with necessary parts and technicians to keep it operational, doing the same thing but farther away is just not going to work.

I hope I live long enough to see it, but I’m not holding out hope that it will happen in my lifetime.
