Making a bold prediction here: in 30-40 years’ time, one of those will be replaced with something to the effect of “Waste less time on the internet”

I’ve noticed this with videogames, and tbh I’m kinda surprised more people haven’t connected it to there yet. Videogames can be a hobby, but if it’s all someone does at home for mental stimulation, I don’t forecast it’s living to the fullest. When going through a new experience, it can be memorable, yet the grind-heavy nature of most modern games doesn’t produce much for memorable moments, and often is forgotten in a month’s time save for the knowledge of how much time was spent on that.

Social media is rather similar, in that it mirrors the addictive nature of locking your attention and supplying unmemorable mental stimulation, at the cost of substantial time.

In my completely nonbiased and objective opinion that’s factual in every way: This is not healthy. I dont feel anyone will look back and say, “I wish I spent more time getting upvotes,” or “I wish I got that cool skin in the game I dont play anymore.”

Call me crazy, but I’ve had this thought about a lot of “boring” architecture. Why don’t we just say it’s an open graffiti spot, so that these large boring walls turn into something colorful on the outside? It’s most likely only gonna be as high as you can get a ladder, but I feel that’s better than nothing. Some people will certainly spray profanities on it, but graffiti spots already exist in some recreational areas, and those bits tend to get sprayed over by someone else, whereas more beautiful sections tend to remain far longer without being touched.

  • This is good news, and gotdamn I’ll take my wins where I can get 'em, but just to clarify, its a victory with caveats:

    • A warrant or probable cause is enough to use ALPRs
    • A subsequent Oklahoma legislative discussion over this matter did not put forth outlining repercussions for violating this new restriction.
    • And likely most difficult of all, the 30-day history was what considered it a search. All Flock would need to do is decrease the history to a few days, which is still just as useful for most investigations, for it to not be considered a search. After writing this out, I learnt Flock already had plans to reduce to a 7-day window.

So again, this is a good thing despite these flaws. I’d rather have some limits than none at all, but keep pursuing this. The fight has always been about whether this tech should be allowed or not, not whether or not you need to look suspicious. I can’t help but feel that until a large case at the supreme court happens, our best route is still via legislative endeavors. While its scummy that politicians are only now addressing it when they’re around an election time, it’s still gaining traction nonetheless.

Got me so conflicted in the ESP32 scene, 'cuz like, I dont wanna have unoptimized code for a microcontroller. They’re not exactly known for insane performance overheads. Yet most of the projects I’ve recently been taking up just wouldn’t exist at all without it.

It is rough that many types of peanut butter contain the sugar content they do. Really deceptive with how significant it builds up to being once put into perspective. I encourage y’all to try plain peanut butter, just nuts and salt. Gonna be a slightly different experience, but the peanut intensity is just so much greater, and man its much healthier.

Speaking from experience, as I am actively eating it now.

  • Quite a lotta opinions people have on this comment chain, lemme throw mine in too while the gettin’ is good! Also Tl;Dr: We can fix it, but think of the shareholders!

I’ve come to interpret a lot of these modern problems and solutions as questions of capital. To sound like a broken record, having as highly capitalist of an economic system as we do creates a lot of these incentives, so much so that I feel the question itself isn’t necessarily a question of climate policy, but rather a question of our relationship between company and government. Partially because we have a cyclical system of: company lobbies for good law -> good law nets company more money -> repeat, but in the direction of environmental policy.

The EPA exists for a reason, the FDA exists for a reason, basically all three letter burecracies exist for a reason, It’s to preserve something that is found to be important. Increasingly though, companies are exerting larger and larger power on government, and that’s serving to pursue their interests, which in many cases means reductions or cuts to these agencies that can get in their way of profits.

  • I just made my first purchases from GOG a few weeks ago, and did it from a Linux machine. I believe it auto-detected I’m on Linux and said “Hey, this game does not natively support Linux” right at the top of the game’s page, and even said “Hey, X games in your library dont natively support Linux” when I was at the checkout. As for the ones that did, it changed to saying “This game does support Linux” on the game’s store page.

Honestly, feels good to see this sorta stuff, but this is just each game on an individual basis, independent of GOG’s launcher.

Edit: Thankfully, throw in a smidgen of wine or proton, and it’s likely all the incompatibilities are compatible.
