why would you need a text description when you can just look at the image

Because some people can’t see well enough to read the text on the image or identify what’s happening in it. They use screen readers that read text out loud for them but those screen readers can’t recognize the text or context of the picture either so we put a text description, so people with bad vision can still enjoy the memes through those screen readers
What if you were blind using a screen reader
In addition to what the others already said, sometimes, Lemmy is a little weird and doesn’t load (all) images (happened to a lot of images hosted on the db0 instance a few days ago), and alt texts are really helpful when that happens.
