The studio told the Wachowskis it was going to be made with or without them.
The result was a movie about beloved characters being ripped out of the past unnaturally and turned into something they’re not by a program that only cares about his personal benefit at everyone else’s expense. Lara reburied the franchise for a time successfully while telling an actually decent story about why it shouldn’t exist.
It was a good condemnation of greed killing art, that made itself clear in a lot of ways that it didn’t want to be considered part of the same story.
The concept was such a good idea; movie started off strong. But in typical Wachowski sequel fashion, they seemly couldn’t figure out what to do with the second half of the film, and just threw in whatever filler they could to be done with it. (At least it felt that way to me.)
The concept probably would have worked better for them as a short. They don’t know how to write a feature-length film and keep it entertaining anymore.
I wanted to like Matrix Resurrections, I really did.

That’s an interesting story, it actually makes sense. Cool.

Didn’t Keanu say he wouldn’t do it without the Wachowskis?
They could still make a Matrix movie without Keanu
I think I’d rather have seen that
