Much like oil subsidies is why we still buy gas guzzlers as a society, subsidizing corn leads to HFCS being shoved into everything because we’ve already paid for it so it’s basically free. From an economic standpoint it’s stupid not to use a bunch of it.
But like, if we don’t need a shit ton of corn, let’s just fucking grow less corn…
Let it go back to woods and give farmers a buyout to let it stay wild for 50 years
We definitely have that problem, but I think targeting meat and dairy should be the first targets to cut subsidies. They’re the biggest offenders. Put that subsidy money towards creating and marketing plant-based alternatives.
Plus, since a good amount of corn goes to animal feed, you’d be reducing the demand.
I don’t see how you’d be able to convince farmers to not farm, though. Even if you paid them to not farm, they still want to farm. Nobody does it for the money. (Except corporate farms, of which there are a lot, and they’ll find ways to both not farm and still make money off the land, like haying or logging.)
Just change the subsidies from corn to a variety of other crops that are more useful and less damaging to the land. Cut the corn ethanol subsidies while we’re at it too!
We grow all this unnecessary corn so we can be self-sufficient on food at any time, in case a world war breaks out
In theory it could be positive because it provides a better bargaining position for the US to de-escalate a potential world war
I’d rather we stop it because it’s wasteful, and that bargaining position could easily be used for brinksmanship by the US (which we have somewhat seen with Trump, although not yet at that level)
We really need to get rid of corn subsiding…

Lol, no they don’t. Farmers have always been happy to take free money not to farm. It’s a thing we’ve done for a long time

Buddy…
We need diesel to harvest, we save that diesel by dying it red and saving it for agriculture use…
trump is letting states use those reserves for road use, and farmer won’t have any to harvest.
And if we were saving for food, we’d save soybeans
