Wasn’t aware it was this bad in Spain and it sounds like the company needs to be burnt down, executives should play hangman and every government official should resign, because they didn’t serve any purpose during this whole ordeal.
The company seems to have won on a technicality but shouldn’t have or Spain has the American “justice system” aka everything for the corporations.
She got evicted because housing is managed by the autonomous community (kind of like US states) of where she resides.
Madrid is ruled by the PP, which is the right wing. These protests are happening right in front of the mayors loft that she bought with public money dedicated to housing.
At the national level the government can only provide resources.
I am actively working to try and push for public housing in another area that’s also been affected by speculation and its the same story; PP based government does nothing while they enable speculation and rent goes up to ~200% of the median salary.
The autonomous government has ways of combating these: today if they so wished they’d declare the community a zone of “contested housing market” that’d immediately freeze rent raises and ensure the contracts are protected.
