Just let them eat cake!
Damn liberals always telling you what to do.
Conservatives just make it prohibitively expensive to do what you want to do.
Just wait until they start policing what those on food stamps are putting in their grocery carts again. I swear that was almost an entire genre of “reporting” for them for a while there.
And then telling you what to do.
This administration is going to accidentally encourage a ton of earth friendly behavior. Won’t offset the evil being done, but it’s kind of funny.
If fossil fuel prices keep skyrocketing, renewable forma of energy are going to suddenly be a lot more economical
A huge win for animal rights and alternative energy!
There’s always a flaky crust beneath every shit pie.
Bread and water for you. And you’ll like it!
Bread and circuses is more like it.
the data center’s need the water more than we do.
Well, that’s the new circus
*CORNbread - don’t forget the subsidies. Those farmers know on which side their bread is buttered. While I’m at it - ethanol for fuel… it’s all to encourage homegrown solutions.
Do you want to know why corn is subsidized? When mexico was producing good corn at a good price many years ago, they were undercutting US cereals for livestock growth. The US basically said, fuck mexico, and just paid the farmers to grow corn in the US just enough so they could sell their corn at a slightly lower price. It devastated Mexican farmers who had built a system of selling corn to the cereal grain hungry US. My native Mexican coworker told me in great detail about that one.
The US putting their fingers is a well-established pie for their own self gain? Say it ain’t so!!
Pretty good at economic warfare
If food is too expensive, don’t eat.
-Republicans
Famine makes ecconomic sense
-Also Republicans
Why aren’t the plebians having kids? We need more wage slaves! Maybe outlawing abortion is the solution.
-Republicans, again
I was in an argument just yesterday on the “not having enough kids” subject where people were insisting that younger generations are choosing to live in “expensive places” and that they should move to “cheaper places” so they can start families. As if the idea of abandoning their lives, careers and friends to go live out in the boonies in order to provide a bare-minimum QoL for their family is going to change any dual-income-no-kids couples’ minds.
"These goddamn city slickers are moving out here and making everything expensive "
There are no cheap places to move. In the USA, anyway. Anywhere that has “affordable” homes has no jobs, so they’re not actually affordable. And employers are getting harder about remote work. It’s very frustrating because I would happily move to a “less expensive area” but I can’t afford it 😂
“Clearly, this generation knows nothing of hardship. It may not seem like it but we live in the most equitable period in the history of the US and the tools and technology available to you give you no excuse for failure. The previous generations had the Great Depression and World Wars and all you do is complain. Instead of living selfishly beyond your means, try living on a budget. You don’t need to have money to start having kids, there are people living in poverty all over the world and that’s not stopping them.”
Obviously, just about the biggest /s I’ve ever /s’ed. These are just an example of the things people have said to me, taken more or less verbatim.
Valuing yourself? Sounds pretty selfish to me. /s
There’s a gap between valuing oneself and just trying to survive.
If I valued myself, I would living around the California central coast or wine country, not North Carolina.
Also “Eggs are too expensive, I will bring the prices down on day one”
Are eggs still expensive? I haven’t heard anyone bitch about it in a while and I have my own flock.
Yet when Michelle Obama merely suggested that Americans eat better and exercise, the pedo GOP blew a gasket.
They’re all friends in DC. Its theater when they get upset with eachother so that we the people divide ourselves so they can stay in power and not be forcibly removed.
Is Trump about to give the same inadvertent boost to plant-based diets and the environment as he did for renewables?
He’s so far right that he’s popping out on the left like in Kid Icarus. Did you hear about those $5k socialism checks? EVs are getting adopted en masse. Now reducing beef in diets? What’s next, common sense gun control? Fully legalized cannabis? Trust busting?
It’s too bad he’s holding up gigantic projects like wind and solar. Also, many subsidies for EV and rooftop solar disappeared. So, yeah, if he brought that back, demand might shoot way up thanks to the failed policies of donnie.
I was hoping somebody other than me would remember that!
I thought that might be where she goes, but she’s about as clueless about nutrition as can be expected of a winger.
Good message, wrong reasoning.
Ecologists have been telling people [from rich countries] to minimize beef consumption or drop it altogether for years, but not because of its price tag.
not because of its price tag
I get what you mean, and agree, but want to point out that at least in a sense, it is because of the price tag: the cost to the environment and to others, in the form of water use, land use, carbon and methane emissions, etc. Internalizing those external costs would make beef cost more money at the point of sale.
Not just water use, but the run-off gets into our fresh water and makes it be not fresh.
LOL, she was soooo close for a moment, I guess. She’s still adhering to protein mythologies, it seems. It’s 2026. Do people still not know?
But I find it funny that the cons clutched their pearls so hard over Michelle suggesting kids get more exercise and eat vegetables. And now it’s a con that is depriving them of beef and telling them to make do.
I thought the liberals were going to make conservative eat bugs and live in a shoebox and own nothing?
They are hypocrites, they don’t care and neither does the electorate. They would have dragged her regardless of what she did or said. Remember they were making a commotion about a fucking tan suit.
RFK must be pissed at her for not promoting 100% ‘Murican BEEF TALLOW, a real pioneer man’s food.
LOL, beef tallow.
That reminds me, after reading the book Protein:
I suppose she might have been able to promote cheaper alternatives like whey for people wringing their hands over their proteinmaxxing.
But since that made a journey from waste product to being sold as a health food product, I suppose that price was jacked up, too.
Oil and beef are expensive. 😞
Oil and beef are expensive. 😀

“But if it is too expensive — unlike fuel, Benny — you can eat chicken, pork, salmon, eggs."
“Let them eat salmon.” LOL.
So there are alternative proteins. That’s a free market situation. But there is no alternative to the petro-state. Doing less driving is communism.
If it free market it I completely cut off my consumption of ultimately useless Amazon junk, thus helping to produce less CO2 emissions from the manufacturing of useless Chinese Amazon junk?
Nah, that’s commie shit too.
let them eat cake
I thought it was poor quality Argentinian beef?
I forgot this ref, it’s a ref, right?
It’s something that Marie Antoinette was accused of saying when French peasants were starving just before the French Revolution. Consensus is that she never actually did but it’s a good little anecdote for rich people being blissfully unaware of real life.
And they said the democrats wanted to take away hamburgers.
Well, she didn’t tell them to eat rice and beans, which would have been too woke, I guess. Even if much smarter on a whole lot of levels.
She pointed them at other animal foods, or as become the new fashion, “protein”.
Got that Marie Antoinette energy.
Have y’all seen the price of cake?

I went to the grocery store tonight, a single prefabricated slice of cheesecake was $9. That should be the price at a nice restaurant.
It is kinda nice that Impossible Steak Bites now costs less per unit of mass than beef does. Going vegetarian starting to make more sense every day…
That’s good to hear. Given all the inputs into things like beef, plant-based should almost always be cheaper. I’m still irritated when something vegetarian/vegan on the menu is as expensive or even more expensive than the omnivore edition.
Few things highlight the deep distortions that actual social engineering does to the marketplace as much as that.
Of course, buying certain ingredients and making plant-based yourself can often be far cheaper than eating out.
Sometimes the cost of processing itself is non-trivial.
Fermented sauces, for example, tend to be much more expensive than just the raw ingredients, because the process itself is complex (and requires significant labor and/or equipment to keep safe for human consumption).
In order to make some of these plant based meat substitutes, the complex processes need to basically move enough volume to be able to take advantage of economies of scale. So we’ll probably get there eventually, at least once these plant protein products become mainstream enough.
Yes, all fair, and I think you are right. Add in that they are trying to cut against the grain of a system that revolves around setting up huge incentives for beef production and it’s going to be tough to match on price.
Still, it’s rather annoying.
I tend not to eat many substitutes in most cases, especially at home. I don’t really need the extra sodium of something like Impossible…
I’ve been at places where the veggie options were rather limited, but they’d have burgers on the menu and you could sub in an Impossible Burger - for an extra $4. And last time I’ve eaten there was prior to Covid, so I’m sure it’s even more now…
Increased demand for these products will bring competition, which will bring costs down. So support these guys when you can!
Do it. Not just because of cost, but because it’s the right thing to do.
The upside too all of this shit? It’s making people take a hard look at how their lust for first-world consumption, immediate gratification and convenience is the very source of the problem we’re facing now.
Making the right choice economical is just the icing on the cake!
