Nearly 300 academics have applied to a French university’s offer to take in US-based researchers rattled by the American government’s crackdown on academia, as a former French president called for the creation of a “scientific refugee” status for academics in peril.

My German Visa was just approved. Off to a university asap. We take two STEM professors with kids going into engineering as a group out of the US. I have a feeling we’re just the leading edge of the sluice gates opening.

90 years ago, Germans were coming to America. Today, the flow is the other direction. History doesn’t repeat, it rhymes.

I wish i was valuable enough to be able to leave, but i dont have any important skills, and I spent the last 12 years exercising my 1st Amendment rights on Reddit before being permabanned in the post Inauguration bloodbath. They’ve got my post history, and sooner or later the list of people to oppress will reach my name.

1st amemdment doesn’t apply to private businesses. If they want to ban you, they can.

Considering they want to be International, they have to follow the rules of each country, so youll usually end up on the stricter side with everything. Lowest denominator and such.

Wow, you completely missed the point. I wasn’t complaining about being permabanned, I was pointing out that to be permabanned, they must have reviewed my 12 years of posts, and determined that I don’t fit Reddit’s new Nazi-collaboration mission, now that they’ve abandoned their original Free Speech mission.

I suspect I now have a target on my back.

I interpreted it as you said it.

I didnt say you complained, I explained a concept to you.

An old comment likely was reported and you got banned for it.

They would knock on your door without banning you if you were a target. They know you cant go back to commenting after you arrive in El Salvador.

So don’t be paranoid, but also don’t be stupid. Lemmy doesn’t protect you.

You missed the point and cherry picked one thing to pick the shit out of despite its irrelevance to the point.

It’s interesting times for everyone these days, so stay safe out there.

I recall people threatening to move to Canada during the first Trump elections. You know it’s bad when people are actually trying to get to France.

It’s over already. It’s going to take decades to come back from this, if at all since the reputation is shaken at the core, and that is very difficult to rebuild.

The funding cuts and uncertainty and stifling is speech is shocking, but this is already affecting young scientists. There are cuts to summer research stipends, grant pausing means no work for some researchers. It’s the future that will really hurt when we don’t have those scientists since they either didn’t pursue science or went to other countries.

America has held a very central seat of science for quite some time, but that’s done. Europe is going to replace is—and already is. It’s a shame too since American higher Ed is structurally setup to be much more agile in how it pursues inquiry.

without systemic change to ensure this doesn’t happen again, the world is done with simple trust of america… it’ll take decades and change that im almost certain america is incapable of… or other guarantees

kinda was bad before too, because they have to frame grant applications in a way that doesnt point to something climate change or someone as the sole cause of the reason they are researching. alot of phds left thier fields over having to do grant writing more than what they became a PHD for.

There’s a very high chance you might find work in the Netherlands. And it’s even better since it’s a really nice country and practically everyone speaks English. Germany is a bit rougher if you don’t speak the language, especially in non-tech related fields.

interesting, seems chemical does have a niche that is still useful. the chem professors when i was in Community dint seem like they were going anywhere with thier fields so people really cant guage the difficulty and jobs of the field, they were content enough to teach it, but thier expectations were kinda high for this school. Only one i heard was a researcher at a university, but he was only a lab instructor.

There is a visa you can get in the uk which I’m considering for bs/ms holders within the past 5 years from specific schools that I’m seriously considering. The problem is it’s only for 2 years (3 with a phd)

Just get over and figure out how to stay while there?

Or marry and UK person. Even just pay for a marriage of convenience.

        Get out. Ship is sinking.
