I wonder if there were power surges or some other electrical problem that kept on killing the motors.

3·2 months agoRedLib presently spoofs the OAuth tokens and behavior of the official Android app to access the website, so they are kind of doing something like that already.
The challenge for instance operators is routing the traffic appropriately to avoid the inevitable rate limiting from Reddit for popular RedLib instances.
Instance operators end up using a variety of approaches to get around this such as having multiple RedLib instances each with its own IP so that if one becomes rate limited, their site can switch over to another instance while the rate limit cools down.

Another point is that there are many areas where existing recycling and other environmentally friendly approaches can be greatly improved. For instance, the infinitely recyclable aluminum beverage cans are only recycled at around 43% in the US. Despite any wasteful practices by the ultra-wealthy, this is an area where everyone still must be diligent.
It’s up to application software to define what it does. I have never seen a keyboard with function keys beyond F12 in person, but they do exist. Software is very unlikely to respond to F15, which is why Caffeine uses it to keep the system awake. Notably, the program can also instruct Windows to stay awake using its native mechanism instead (possibly insufficient for something like MS Teams) or another virtual key code of the user’s specification.
For what it’s worth, with Caffeine, it’s a single, portable executable, so it doesn’t need to be installed in the conventional sense, but if your IT department monitors processes or whitelists what is allowed to run, this would still be a problem.
There’s a tool for Windows called Caffeine that simulates pressing the F15 key, which is almost never used by any software being that most keyboards don’t have function keys that go that high.
From the webpage:
If you have problems with your PC locking or going to sleep, caffeine will keep it awake. It works by simulating a keypress once every 59 seconds, so your machine thinks you’re still working at the keyboard, so won’t lock the screen or activate the screensaver.

Unless the website is supposed to do something more that I’m simply not seeing myself, it appears to simply embed this one YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9npOp9WhWM

5·6 months agoIt’s shocking that the US actually engaged in war with Iran so readily without the administration considering the known scenario of the Straight of Hormuz being closed by Iran. I’m amazed by the lack of planning and logistics for something that should have been planned and discussed a good while beforehand, but I guess I shouldn’t be with this administration.
There really need to be safeguards implemented to prevent actions like this from just being conducted on the turn of a dime without any awareness of others, discussion, etc. beforehand.
I used to think that illegal actions of the US Executive Branch would just fail like getting a 403 error when trying to access a Web resource without proper authorization, but I guess this was naïve to think.
There really need to be major changes in the US Government to make it so that the mechanisms of government won’t so willing put illegal actions into play. Though the response of the courts has often been good, it is super slow and merely reactive. Instead, impermissible, illegal actions need to be preempted before the mechanisms of government carry them out.
Many Christians found this insulting too because it was on Easter.
For example, Tucker Carlson stated that Trump’s post is insulting to both Muslims and Christians. He said that he was personally insulted by it.
Why does this map label the US as “North America” in the first version?
That’s a really weird error.
I would not be surprised if Google deliberately introduces slowdowns to some ad blocker users.

11·7 months agoIt’s not as if you really posed an argument. You just vaguely gestured to over a hundred years as if that tells us anything at all.
Feel free to elaborate on more specific points.
This is a great write up. Thank you for writing it.

In college, I lived close to my university’s campus near an intersection that would get very busy during sporting events and other occasions where there would be many people in town.
The intersection would set all the lights to red if it had detected no activity for a good while (such as at night when it was rarely used) and would also immediately change the green light for cross traffic to red if you pressed the crosswalk button so long as there wasn’t any cross traffic for a few minutes.
It was surprisingly sophisticated traffic control considering that most of the other intersections were just on simple timers.
