Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL about the simplest combustion engine (teapot engine)English
2·1 month agoYou drew a turbine on the top, how it’s simpler. If you just boil the water you can’t use its power, you need some mechanism to convert it to mechanical force.
Interestingly airplane engines had a similar evolution. Early airplanes, before WW1 had rotary engines, where the full engine rotated with the propeller, similar to the Aeolipile. It was later developed to radial engine, where there is a drivetrain between the propeller and the engine.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL about the simplest combustion engine (teapot engine)English
3·1 month ago- OP edited the title after my comment, the “TIL” and the first few words were added later.
- For such a generic image they could just use some stock photo or something. I’m not fully anti ai, I know there are some actual reasonable usecases, but this is just slop and laziness. For example here are 1000s royalty free images of boiling kettles: https://pixabay.com/images/search/boiling kettle/
- English is not my first language, I didn’t intended to have an impolite tone, in my head it sounded neutral

- If you are looking for the most basic, earliest, first tried steam engines, you are several thousand years off: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aeolipile
I use powershell on linux, it’s on AUR: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/powershell
I write scripts on my linux machine then run them on windows workstations

Videos@lemmy.world•Christa Pike at 18 years old when she was sentenced to death. She is now 50 and they are supposed to kill her this week
24·1 month agoThey also tortured her a bit before the murder:
According to court testimony, for the next 30 minutes, Slemmer was taunted, beaten, and slashed. Shipp used a box cutter to carve a pentagram into her chest while she was still alive. Finally, Pike smashed Slemmer’s skull with a large chunk of asphalt, killing her.

Technology@lemmy.world•Telegram's t.me domain placed on serverHold, breaking links worldwideEnglish
23·4 months agoTldr: they don’t know the official reason, the article is just speculation. But they think it was an error, it wasn’t intended againt telegram
OFAC published a Recent Actions entry dated July 13, 2026, the same day the serverHold status appeared, titled “Cyber-related Designations; Cuba Designations; Issuance of Cuba-related Frequently Asked Question.” […] Buried in that same entity list is the actual connection: FIRST VPN SERVICE, also known as 1VPNS or FVPNS, a Dnipro-based operation OFAC designated under the CYBER4 program. The SDN entry lists its identifying infrastructure, including several standalone websites (1vpns.com, 1vpns.net, 1vpns.org, 1jabber.com) and one more entry alongside them: an alternate website listed as t.me/FirstVPNService. […] To be clear about where the evidence stops: OFAC’s own filing does not mention t.me, the serverHold status, or Telegram at all. Nobody at Treasury, Identity Digital, doMEn, or Telegram has confirmed this is the actual trigger.

This was a terrible video, it just explans how VAT works, and calls 19%VAT huge (lower than average in Europe). It does not answer the question why so many millionaires live there and how its economy works.
Actual info from wiki:
The state has no income tax and low business taxes and thrives as a tax haven both for individuals who have established residence and for foreign companies that have set up businesses and offices. The state retains monopolies in a number of sectors, including gambling, tobacco, the telephone network, and the postal service.

601·5 months ago5% is huuuge overestimate. Maybe on a tech site or forum. On a regular website for the general public? Less than a rounding error. Remember, we are in a lemmy bubble
I don’t see why it’s a mistake. People simplify stuff, and those who care about such things (mostly us) will know the difference. If I explain what is mastodon to regular people, I just say “a twitter clone”. People don’t care about how this things work under the hood, it’s just a minute detail.
What mistake?
Yes, it’s mostly about special omv packages, they won’t get fixes and updates anymore. They are coming from omv’s own repos, and they may break, this date is not a hard deadline when something will stop working, just a heads up. As you can see the date was published only 2 days early.

You shared your personal tracking code (the
