vibecoders have made us all so skeptical of any text that gets made fast. I don’t blame people for being skeptical but it’s sad when people jump to the negative conclusion. idk what it is exactly but you seem like the real deal. very cool project and you seem to be a good sport about everything

  • This is the way. Been running (basically) this for years and genuinely keep my eye out for any simpler suggestions, but nothing comes close.

I do it slightly different where I use an external DNS (bunny) and point the A records to the tailscale IP of the server running Caddy.

    The benefits are:

    • I don’t force the whole house to rely on my local DNS setup.
    • Nothing breaks when I change routers and mess up IP mappings (which I was doing a lot, but I finally got some nice unifi equipment, so maybe I don’t have to worry about that anymore).
    • I don’t “leak my LAN configuration” to public DNS but I don’t care about that anymore.
    • I can use Tailscale DNS override if I want just my tailnet devices to go through some private/premium DNS resolver.
    • Don’t need to set up subnet routing in Tailscale

The downside is it doesn’t work at all for devices not on Tailscale. Real bummer when, like, I want my smart TV to just be able to find jellyfin on my LAN with the same domain names. But everything else about it is very convenient.

  • ntfy never really had good push to iOS, in my experience. The only way I could keep my private channels consistently working was to use the PWA and specifically not sign into it (otherwise, my login token would expire and break things).

I gave up and switched to pushover and as long as I’m somewhat cognizant about what i’m including in the notifications, I’ve been pretty happy.

I’d love for something self hostable to get as good as pushover on iOS

  • Good luck 🫡 I made the switch about half a year ago and went all in on rootless quadlets while I was at it. It was a pretty nightmarish couple weeks figuring out things like user id mappings and rootless permissions, but I got there eventually. Landed on a super neat Traefik config that should work for anyone and makes spinning up new quadlets with their own reverse proxied subdomains really simple. I should really post it somewhere…

In the end I wouldn’t exactly say it was worth it… but it sure feels cool to be fully moved into a more open/native container implementation.
