I think a lot of people had this reaction and the sales figures reflect it. I was an OG FF7 fan and the tone change is drastic. I wanted to believe it would get better but it didn’t and I don’t think will.

I know I am late to the party here but the Final Fantasy 7 Remake Trilogy just didn’t work for me. I played the first game and suddenly my guard was up. Some of the combat is cool, and of course the graphics are better. But every story change from the original was worse, all of the new characters were boring and clearly shoe horned in, and the general game seemed to lack direction despite having solid rails to coast on.
Still, I finished Remake and bought Rebirth and just couldn’t. In the first town all the flaws of the remake trilogy were on display. Uninstalled, sold the game, and have zero plans to buy Revolutions (is that the last one?)
I do not see SE capturing the spirit of FF again, which is such a loss.

I think it found its audience after some time but when it was released many around me treated it as adult power rangers and thought it was corney. It’s not that they are/were wrong it’s just that those things didn’t make it a bad movie in my opinion. It’s probably more liked than I remember, but very few join my annual viewing party. 😆 Yeah PR2 I’m not a fan.
From my first viewing in the theatre in 2013 in Singapore until this very second I really like the first Pacific Rim. It could have been really really bad but in the end it’s a movie with heart and you root for the characters. The CG is exceptional and the Robots and Monsters move extraordinarily well!
Should I not sell then?

World of JRPGs@lemmy.zip•Dragon Quest lead doesn't think the JRPG series "must always feature turn-based combat," which makes me wonder if Dragon Quest 12 could follow in Final Fantasy's footstepsEnglish
1·6 months agoI will echo in the other comments ITT. Yes, sure, it doesn’t always REQUIRE turn based game play, but Yagi-san’s company, and the DQ history has set the EXPECTATION that it will be. If you change that I will not buy it. Just like if GTA VI is turned based fans would rage as it doesn’t fit the expectation set. (Personally I would probably play at turn-based GTA).

World of JRPGs@lemmy.zip•Final Fantasy 7 Remake had "no option other than a trilogy," lead says, since the "sheer volume" of the original PS1 JRPG was too absurdEnglish
1·6 months agoI really wish I had your ambition for accepting what Square Enix decided to do with the game. I think the difference is these games are ruining things for me. And with Square Enix saying “this is how FF7 was meant to be” it worries me that this will be the FF7 we know going forward. The original reduced to as asterisk.

2·6 months agoI grew up on FF. This “remake” has not impressed me. I wanted to like it but every possible story beat is done worse than the original. I feel FF16 felt like doing homework.
Capcom is showing every studio how actual remakes should be done. They don’t spend 7 years and over 100 million USD to do it. They all sell block buster numbers and is exactly what the old fans want with the upgrades and quality of life changes the new fans want.
The only way to convey to the decision makers at Square Enix I do not like their game is with my wallet. If you feel the same way I recommend doing the same. Do not pre-order, do not buy.

0·6 months agoI am curious, do you know why they can’t kill it? The only reason I can think of is that “new” reddit requires access or something?

This sounds like my experience. I bought a PS5 for FFXVI thinking FF had grown up. The only word I can use to describe this game is “homework.” It felt like I was doing homework the whole time. Boring, repetitive, bloated, and coasting on the FF name. I wanted FFXVI to bring those feelings I had back in my youth. It only reminded me of homework. I finished the game and have wrote off FF since.
As you point out the story was stupid despite a cool world and what seemed like interesting and deep backstory. I liked Clive, Jill, and Cid, but the others characters where one-dimensional. Some of the NPCs were more likable.
Whole heartedly agree with you that gaming journalists have zero integrity. I am all for people liking and enjoying different games/genere/etc. but a 9/10 means almost perfect. This game is far from that.
