man, why are devs, so often, just sources of bullshit

yeah, unfortunately this is one the pejorative treadmill. Anyway you linguistically classify something that is considered a negative trait will eventually become the new pejorative use against those people

Yeah, that is a weird jump in accusations. Like… completely non-sequitur. If some important context isn’t missing, this is weird behavior. possibly a sign of pathological issues.
so, yeah, unless something important is missing, PTB

The things you are exposing yourself to on your phone?

There has always been true journalists, and it seems there are periods where groups become more prominent in waves, like you describe with that period, but, at least from the many news papers I have read from that time, from the US, Canada, and the UK it was all corporate voice, and extremely ham fisted government propaganda, and that portion of journalism seems to be outlier. Newspapers needs sales, Ads need viewer, etc., and sensationalist bullshit, outrage, and gossip, have always been the solution to that.
I can’t tell you how many ads I have seen for over consumption, especially of questionable shit, with the US government calling for being a real American, or whatever, that buys this American product. Write-ups about military actions, especially ones with natives, that are basically just fabricated stories about brave christian soldiers protecting innocent homesteaders from the savages. When I first started looking these up I was kinda surprised at how bad it was actually, and I was expecting pretty much the same. The biggest thing I noticed was that there was a LOT more long form article 200 years ago. However they, like today, were largely industry/political puff pieces, socialite blather, etc.
Also, the amount of casual libel in century plus old news papers is insane. Absolutely would not fly today.

Have you ever read newspapers from the 19th or 18th centuries? Cause I have bad news for you about the history of journalism.

my personal view of this is that, as phones became something people were on all the time, regardless of what they happened to be doing, more people started using speaker because they are often doing multiple things at once, or need to pay better attention to what is happening around them. I believe that hands free units in cars have also played a part normalizing just using speaker phone, especially when needing to pay attention to what is happening around them in public.

That is not “allowing us to be the sole host of the thing that is destroying our economy and trust in all media from inside out”. That is keeping parity with it. China is also having major issues with fabricated media from AI. The Chinese government has also latched on to AI, as many others, to manipulate media, and many other police state things. Their economy is heavily, heavily, invested in the success of llms. When this bubble bursts, it will be bad for every major economy on earth, as they are all disproportionately invested in this.

China is 38%, and growing, of the world’s investment in LLMs

Yeah, why should they pay for people to investigate them?

Cultural genocide is not recognized as a genocide internationally, or within the ICJ. So there is no consensus on cultural erasure, as genocide, where as there is in fact one with the others. Some countries, and ngos, considered what China is doing as genocide too, most don’t. This also stands with world wide standards for any type of cultural erasure. Similar systems in other countries of the west do not agree with Canada’s ruling.
So, like I said, there are academics that argue for it, and I understand their reasoning, but there are plenty who classify it differently, and I agree with their reasoning.

The children forced to go to these schools largely were returned to the region they came from, when their residence was ended. The schools also tended to operate in the region of the people they put through the system. The Trail of Tears, however, is the kind of thing where displacement is considered to be a genocide, these things are both horrible, but they are not the same.

Right?! That name goes fucking hard. These days he generally goes by E.B. His older brother is named Sunbear, though he goes by his middle name, which is more common. The youngest got European common names.
They did not put up with this shit. The school was a Kafka-esque nightmare, and many other people had major problems. I was almost in a lawsuit with them, but they settled for covering my tuition to go to another school, an awesome school at that.
Talking to him, apparently there is (or was, at the time) some level of controversy within their tribe over this type of naming. I guess there is a portion of the population that thinks they are being stereotypical, and it hurts the native image in some way. Some said if they wanted those names they should have used the native language, rather than english, however there was some problem with that, I can’t remember what. So that was an interesting insight.

A friend of mine, back in my school days, is a native american guy. His name is Eagle Boy, and when he started school where I was the teacher straight asked him what his “real” name was, and when he said that his legal name is Eagle Boy, she said “No, your christian name”. He also got shit for his hair, and it was a constant point of contention vs their dress code. They knew this type of discrimination was illegal, they just didn’t give a shit, and there was very little chance they would suffer any consequences for it.

China is persecuting the Uyghurs, they are forcing them into harsh programs to strip them of their non-Chinese cultural aspects. Some academics see this as a type of genocide, as they are effectively erasing a culture/ethnicity. Most feel there has to be a physical displacement, or mass killings in an attempt to destroy their people, to truly qualify for this label. I am on the side of the latter. I can understand the former’s argument, but I think cultural erasure, rather than physical displacement/mass killing, should be a separate atrocity. Looking at what OP has been saying, it seems they believe this too.
Only thing I really see on leftist spaces that bothers me, in this arena, is the people who will argue as I do about the Uyghurs, but consider the residential schools of North America a genocide. The natives went through a real genocide, cultural erasure was a clear step back in depravity. An atrocity none-the-less, just not THE atrocity.

This is also a system where you can make your own instance, and make this type of “if x people are involved in a conversation, it is a valid one, regardless of the c/” rule. The democracy within lemmy stems from its freedom of association. Don’t like how place X is run? Move to place Y, or create your own place. If the way X is run is less popular than those, people vote with their participation.

Yeah, they are not powerless to prevent downvote brigades, and serial downvoters. There are a number of ways they can throttle downvote frequency, monitor sources of varying accounts, etc.
thank you, gonna switch instance
