Thank you for posting a version that has a label on it. I don’t mean that sarcastically or anything.

I hate misinformation as much as the next guy but I kind of want to send around an altered version with everyone smiling, including Trump. It’d look like they were horsing around.

Among [false or unsubstantiated claims surrounding the apparent assassination attempt of former President Donald Trump] are unsupported assertions that the CIA was behind the attack in Butler, Pennsylvania — where a bullet grazed the former president’s ear — and that the shooting was staged to paint Trump as a martyr.

    Wait, people seriously think this?

While I didn’t think it was staged, I did have a post removed because I was answering the question of how someone might fake it. At the time I was thinking it was a silly mockery of conspiracy theorists, but in retrospect I am GLAD my post was removed lest anyone think I was serious.

Of course, are you joking? It wasn’t just on Lemmy, I actually saw it on Reddit more and then on TikTok (there were multiple live threads immediately after speculating this). Most of my friends who are MODERATES were immediately saying this. Why? Well, because Trump is a 1) known conspirator (for stealing the elections) 2) known for instigating violence (Jan 6th) 3) known for deceiving people and 4) known to be incompetent (fpur seasons landscaping) so if he did mess up his own false flag and almost died, entirely within brand.

There’s also the weird pose he did afterwards with his fist, and that BBC interview where some guy warned the SS/police about the shooter and they didn’t do anything.

Emerson T. Brooking @etbrooking ~20 hours after a seismic event in American history (with a lot of very bad discourse), this is the first real attempt at AI disinformation that I’ve seen.

Wake-up call for anyone worried that it was deepfakes that were going to radically alter 2024.

Mike Rothschild (no relation) @rothschildmd · 10h There’s a fake version of the Trump photo getting passed around by resistance accounts that claims to show Secret Service agents smiling as they grab Trump. The real photo clearly doesn’t show them smiling.

Oh joy, pulling out all the stops it seems to distort the truth. I expected this and their job is made much easier by the irresponsible tools that Google and other companies put out there for usage. 🙃
